GRAHAM, Wash. -- Josh Powell's note was simple and short, a farewell to the world after two years of being scrutinized in the media, hammered by police and questioned by judges, prosecutors and social workers, living his life under a microscope since the day his wife vanished.

"I'm sorry, goodbye," Powell wrote in an email to his attorney just minutes before authorities say he set fire to his home, killing himself and his two young sons days after he was denied custody and ordered to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation.

New details Monday

  • The Pierce County Sheriff's Office will hold a 2 p.m. press conference to update the investigation.
  • A cousin of Powell tells the Salt Lake Tribune he also received the email that said "I'm sorry. Goodbye" from Josh. He called 911.
  • The attorney for Susan Cox Powell's parents said the eldest son said his mother was in the trunk the night Josh Powell took the kids camping, the same night Susan vanished.
  • A Pierce County Sheriff's Office spokesman says about the explosion,  "It was planned. It's something (Powell) did intentionally and it was something that nobody was going to stop."
  • Steven Powell, Josh's father, is on suicide watch at the Pierce County Jail.

The Sunday blaze at Powell's home brought yet another twist in the very public scandal that began when Susan Powell vanished in 2009. The case had since spiraled into a salacious saga of finger-pointing and accusations of sex and lies -- and now the unthinkable loss of two young lives caught in the crossfire.

A social worker brought the two boys to Josh Powell's home Sunday for what was to be a supervised visit. They rushed toward the home, leaving the social worker behind. By the time she got to the door, Powell had let his sons in but locked her out, Graham Fire and Rescue Chief Gary Franz told The Associated Press.

The social worker called her supervisors to report that she could smell gas. Moments later, the home burst into flames, igniting an inferno that neighbors said rattled their houses.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Ed Troyer said it appeared some sort of accelerant was used to make the house burn faster.

He said emails Powell sent just prior to the blaze seemed to confirm that Powell planned the deadly blast. Troyer didn't elaborate on the content of the emails.

Jeffrey Bassett, who represented Powell in the custody case, said he received an ominous email from his client just minutes before the fire.

"I'm sorry, goodbye," it read.

A cousin of Powell's in Texas tells the Salt Lake Tribune he received the same email. Nathan Leach said he called 911 to have them check on Powell's home in Puyallup.

Powell focus of wife's disappearance

Susan Powell, a pretty 28-year-old mother of two, was reported missing Dec. 7, 2009, after she failed to show up for her stockbroker job in Utah.

Authorities in the couple's hometown of West Valley City, about 10 miles outside Salt Lake City, quickly turned their attention to Josh Powell. He's been the only "person of interest" in the case, but had repeatedly denied any involvement in her disappearance.

"I would never even hurt her," a tearful, red-eyed Josh Powell told CBS' Early Show in August. "People who know me know that I could never hurt Susan."

About a month later, police spent 12 days in the remote central Utah desert looking for clues, and Josh Powell and his father, Steven, quickly disappeared from the limelight. The search area around Topaz Mountain, a popular spot for rock and gem hunters, was about 30 miles south of where Josh told police he went camping with his two children in the hours before his wife's disappearance -- his steadfast alibi.

Attorney: Children said mommy was in the trunk

On Sunday, the lawyer for Susan Powell's parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, told the AP the children had started talking to their grandparents about things they remembered from the night their mother vanished.

"They were beginning to verbalize more," said attorney Steve Downing, whose clients had custody of the children.

"The oldest boy talked about that they went camping and that Mommy was in the trunk. Mom and Dad got out of the car and Mom disappeared."

Police turned up no clues in their desert search, but a day before ending it, Steven Powell, 61, was arrested at his Washington state home and accused of secretly videotaping his daughter-in-law, other women, and young girls taking baths and sitting on the toilet in neighborhood homes.

The elder Powell is now jailed and facing child porn and voyeurism charges. He claimed in previous television interviews that he and Susan Powell were falling in love and even implied a sexual relationship had occurred.

"Susan was very sexual with me," Steven Powell said in one interview at the time. "We interacted in a lot of sexual ways because Susan enjoys doing that."

Susan's father denied the allegations and said Steven Powell had been initiating unwanted sexual advances, and that his daughter had no interest in her father-in-law.

The children, 5-year-old Braden and 7-year-old Charles, were ordered by a judge to then go live with Susan's parents as the parallel cases were investigated.

The custody matter got so heated that at one point a court commissioner in Washington state ordered Chuck Cox and Josh Powell to keep 500 feet apart.

Custody hearings continued, with the latest on Wednesday, during which Josh Powell pleaded with a judge to return his children to him.

"For over four months already, my interactions with my sons and many other aspects of my character have been investigated and documented by" social services, he wrote in an affidavit to the court. "I have proven myself as a fit and loving father who provides a stable home even in the face of great adversity.  ... It is time for my sons to come home."

But the judge ruled against him, ordering the children to remain with Susan Powell's parents, at least until Josh Powell underwent a psycho-sexual evaluation, a process more often used as an assessment tool by courts to determine whether a defendant, largely in sex crimes cases, is likely to reoffend. In this case, the judge ordered it in light of the explicit material found on computers inside Steven Powell's home that led to his arrest.

Sherry Hill, a spokeswoman for the Washington state Department of Social and Health Services, said the social worker who was with the children Sunday was not a Child Protective Services employee but a contract worker with a private agency that supervises visits for the state.

"The visit supervisor for this particular agency had taken the children to the home. When she does that, she sits through the visit and might take notes on her observations," Hill said. "She pulled up in the car, and the kids ran out ahead of her. He closed the door and locked it. She wasn't able to get in, and that's when she smelled gas."

Downing called it "the most horrifying thing you can imagine happening ...The Coxes are absolutely devastated. They were always very fearful of him doing something like this, and he did it."

Bassett said he represented Powell free of charge because "every parent deserves the right to an attorney." Powell called or emailed him at least once a day, and often more than that, and in their conversations "he never once admitted doing anything regarding Susan. In fact, he denied it."

Sgt. Mike Powell of the West Valley City Police Department in Utah said it was too soon to say how Josh Powell's death may impact their probe.

"Quite frankly, this has obviously quickly unfolded up in Washington and we're obviously just working through the details ourselves here," said Powell, who is not related to the family.

Powell did not return a telephone message later in the evening Sunday regarding the children's assertion that their mother had been in the trunk of the family's car on the night she disappeared.

In a statement Sunday night from West Valley City police, authorities said the investigation will remain ongoing as they work to find Susan Powell. It said Utah police were headed to Washington state to work with investigators there in the continuing probe.

Kirk Graves, 39, of West Jordan, Utah, whose wife is Josh Powell's sister, said they were stunned by the news.

"We never contemplated the idea he would do something like this. You just don't expect it from a father," he said.

"His world was falling apart around him and he was going to lose his boys and get arrested for Susan's disappearance. He's a narcissist and he has no love for anyone but himself."

Supervised visits don't work if you send in an unarmed woman to protect innocent children against a narcissist sociopath who lacks moral responsibility and a conscience. They feel they are above the law, have no remorse, and don't respect authority. The legal system failed in this situation, and has in how many others including my own. Children's safety is far more important than visitation. How could this guy have loved his children? Please wake up before more innocent children are harmed.

He burned a house down that was not his, chopped his kids necks, burned them alive....yet he spared the children's belongings by donating them to charity. Shouldn't it have been the other way around? He should of spared his children's lives by giving them to Susan's parents and killed himself somewhere else. I guess the toys were of more value than his own kids lives. The only way that social worker could have saved those kids is if she was a psychic and could predict the future. I wish she would have sensed something bad was going to happen and not gotten out of the vehicle and left with the kids. Too bad she didn't smell the gas ahead of time and gotten a hold of the kids before they ran ahead of her. It wouldn't have made a difference though. He would have easily overpowered her, grabbed the kids, and done what he did. You can't blame the social worker. She's lucky she didn't make it into the house or she would have died too. His intent was to kill himself and the kids not her.

can't imagine who thought it was a good idea to have supervised visits at the home of the only person of interest. Granted if Josh really wanted to do something, he could have done it in public taking others with him even if if the visits were in a "safer" place. Why were visits ever given to a man they believed committed murder. WA continues to mistakenly believe that all children need to spend time with both their parents, despite seriously dangerous situations. I know I've been there, In this state a father can get 1/2 shared custody despite committing domestic violence against the mother. Fathers rights gone wrong. These people are repeat offenders, they never think they have done anything wrong and feel justified in their actions (referring to the narccissist comment in the story). sad that the children still love their parents no matter what horrible things they do. I am deeply saddened by what happened but I am not surprised it ended in tragedy. signs were there long ago

In a case where their is a subject of a murder, why do our courts continue to allow these idiots to get visitation rights of the victim's kids? Another failed public policy involving the innocent. When are these social workers and judges who make rulings that force innocents to be placed in danger, ever going to be held accountable? How many times do we have to be innundated with tragedies like this, before we act? Absolutely pathetic! I'm disgusted!

I am still in shock and in disbelief..Along with feeling great sorrow for the loss of these two beautiful, innocent young boys taken away from Susan's Parents..They were all they had left of their beautiful daughter..and now they are gone..I have no sympathy for Josh Powell, just discusts and contempt for him. He killed there mother..There is no question about that..What caring father would take their children camping in Utah in sub zero weather..And any mother that was ALIVE, would not have lt a father do such a thing..Whereby Susan Powell was dead before he took those boys "camping." The boys are with their mother, their dad is in eternal hell where he belongs.. But going to concentrate on empathy and sorry and prayer for Susan's parents..

I have never appeared before a more biased Judge in my practice, EVER. She fails to follow the civil and local rules as towards NON-PIERCE COUNTY ATTORNEYS. SHE IS EXTREMELY 'ethnocentric' in application of the rules--or lack thereof. Removal from the bench should be instituted immediately. Currently, it is as if NO JUDGE is sitting on the bench. It is an obliteration of the justice system to have her sitting on the bench. Your county, your community should be embarrassed. • Socioeconomic status • Judge Nelson's biases flow toward the status of a party as either plaintiff or defendant. She is especially poor at treating physicians with respect. • She doesn't allow counsel to argue their cases; she makes faces (rolls eyes, shakes head, makes heavy sighs); insults counsel; is demeaning to counsel; gives the appearance of not having read the briefs; she appears to not understand the law or the issues before her.

When a parent is suspected of dangerous behavior, can't the supervised visitation be done in a secure facility? If the children were taken from the home, they should not be brought back, even for a visit, until the decision is overturned.

It sickins me ...we are so soft. I don't care if he was these boys father or not...He had no right to them until this case was solved...Our system should be ashamed and hopefully they learn SOMETHING from this!.....Josh was definitely troubled and was very evil and our legal system failed all over the place! These precious little innocent boys had no chance at all.....many tears and prayers go out to the Cox family and grandparents....so terribly unfortunate!

This entire situation is tragic becasue our laws are such that people like Josh Powell still have rights. Our laws need to change to ensure that kids like Charlie and Braden who are vulnerable are protected at all cost. Since Josh Powell was still a suspect he should have NEVER had the opportunity to visit with these childern superviserd or unsupervised until his name was cleared of any wrong doing with his wife's disappearance. How many more children have to be put in harms way with the Josph Powell's of the world. CHANGE OUR LAWS!!!!!!! Let's vote on that!! Rest in Peace Charlie and Braden we love you. LThomas

Nice going Washington State~! How many more children have to die under "Supervised Vistation" with their parents? How many more children have to die because Washington State has the tragically misguided belief that children must be reunited with their biological parents no matter what?? The ability to procreate does NOT make a person a parent. And WHY were children allowed to visit a man who had murdered their mother??? Rest in peace little Charlie and Braden Powell. No one can hurt you now. And Josh... your reward will be come from The One who knows exactly what you did. My heart goes out to the Cox grandparents of Charlie and Braden. I am SO sorry. I'm speaking as a grandparent who's cared for a grandchild for 9 yrs, and has had 9 yrs of court battles from the mother wanting unsupervised visitation, even though she has an extensive criminal/drug history. And tac253, I'm not blaming the social worker. She's going to have to live with this image forever and I feel sad for her.

The only finger pointing in this story should be soundly pointed to Josh, he murdered his sons and no one else! RIP, little angels. Again... the Press, and Police DONT want to give the whole story! I know the people involved in this outside of the family and the Social Worker called 911 FIRST! Because the of the 'Supervised Visits' that SHOULD have been. The 911 operator told her, 'There is no emergency. I cannot do anything until they are in an emergency situation.' THEN she called the social worker to find out what to do! All you people that claim the 'system' or 'the social worker' just dont know the facts. Its the POLICE and the FATHER that are to blame. This worker was only doing her job. The same job she has done for years. If you want someone to target, how about getting the TRUTH out of ED TROYER! It saddens me that these kids died because of someone elses stupidity. But the main thing we need to remember is not to point fingers. I know thats what it looks like i am doing, but its not. I am just trying to clarify the information that the police and media wont! It makes me sick!

The Social worker should have been an ex - bouncer.. and that the kids could run forward into the house.. it should have been at a public location.. My nephew for a STUPID misdemeanor had to have same but in a public location!!!

Please ensure that you idenitify the person who took the children to their fathers' home as a visitation supervisor. They do not have any particular qualifications other than having a valid driver's lisense and insurance. They are not equivalent to a social worker. One must question why visits were permitted at the home, when there were sexual issues raised. I pass my condolences to the Cox family. Losing a child and then her children is horrendous.

Angelica, so many things went wrong, but lets remember- it was Josh that murdered those children in a most horrific way. He already had gas poured all over the house before the boys arrived. He also had sent those eerie emails saying goodbye. He was the one who set the trap. He waited for those boys to arrive. Had the case worker gone inside with the boys while Josh was armed with a match, we would have had a fourth murder. He was homicidal. It just would have been one more death and really, what could she have possibly done? Remember, he pushed her out and blocked the door. There are so many things to get angry at here, but the case worker was doing her job and it does no good to blame the little guy. I'm sure she's wishing she had superhuman strength to have saved those boys.

Why did she call her supervisor first instead of 911? A. The visit was to be supervised, she was locked out and B. She smelled gas. A B = 911, not supervisor. Also, she should have walked up holding their hands. This would have prevented them from going into the house and she could have gotten close enough to smell the gas. Then maybe she might have made the right choice and not let them go in and call 911. DSHS need to re-vamp their supervised visit training, with the added "when to call 911." Especially with high profile cases. This is another case that slipped through the cracks and all those that allowed the visits should be held accountable. My heart goes out to the family, who have already been through enough. Not to mention the boys who payed the ultimate sacrifice.

It was not that I didn't know he was a ticking time bomb and was still gaming LE about Susan's murder ...but that Children's Protective allowed two little boys & their employee to go unprotected to his house all alone. What don't you get about that and the predictable outcome...the only thing surprising is he didn't blow up the social worker along with two innocents. So he got what he wanted in the end the ultimate control over the lives Susan and her sons. Josh was pure evil.

It was not the "system" that let the boys down, it was Susan Powell's murderer that did that. If you want to blame someone, put the blame where it really goes. Another example of how the system that is suppose to protect kids, cannot. It dosen't matter that the social worker was a contractor. DSHS is utimately responsible. Every worker involved with this case should, at the very least be fired. It's very obvious that Susan Powell died at the hands of her husband. Our justice system is a joke. What about the judge that ok'ed the supervised visit. He should be fired. DSHS and the justice system is uncapable of protecting kids. The entire system is a disaster. I weep for this country.

There is definitely something wrong with the justice system in this country; however, it appears that everyone - the judge, CPS, and the social worker, and the attorney - was all acting within the law. Josh Powell was the lowest form of scum of the earth. May he burn in pergatory. The ONLY thing he did right was rid the rest of us of his presence. What did those little boys do to deserve such a cruel end? What did Charlie and Braden KNOW about this whole nightmare that Josh was afraid everyone would find out? Steven Powell is on "suicide watch?" It's not about that perverted scum of the earth. After all, he raised Josh. He has "3 hots and a cot" at the expense of the taxpayers! Like father like son. Steven raised Josh to be a low-life coward just like himself. May the Cox family eventually find some peace... God bless.

People, you could be way off base with this stuff. Some men have weak holds on things in life and considering the nature of things you could theorize anything your imagination can conceive as to why he would have done what he did. The questions. I may be wrong as well. But think first 1. a man with a house bomb didn't care that he was going to die, he took the boys with him, but why then, if he was pure evil, did he spare the worker, not willing to take her with him, as the courts were definitely his enemy, and all those that work for/with them? hum..... 2. The state of Washington vilifies men in all forms and will be more than happy to punish them for the whack jobs they truly are, even if they are not guilty. Having been found morally guilty already, did he lose all touch because the family, the courts, the media, and the public already condemned him? A man can go as crazy as a woman can when facing the loss of his children, having nothing left to lose, some men snap from the pain

It is horrible that these boys obviously needed to be protected from their own father and from the sounds of it....his jailed father. Bless the grandparents of these little boys for doing everything they could to protect them...while still looking for their missing mother...their daughter. How utterly SAD! It is just gut-wrenching that the safeguards and protections that should have been in place to protect these boys....failed so miserably. Hopefully there will a complete and thorough investigation in regards to the decision-makers in this case and what was the basis of their rulings. SOMETHING FAILED! And it needs to get fixed. My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends...

A petition should be made to in memory of these boys and Susan" But just starting a petition won't stop the Violence even laws on the books will not stop the violence! But it would be nice to somehow honor these dear people whose lives are taken away from them. I'm still crying over these two LITTLE LITTLE BOYS who got burned up today. So painful.......So how would one go about starting some sort of Petition??? watornado

I'm so sad that this happened to those poor babys. Why does this kind of this so called protocol continue. When are we going to start taking care of these children and women for that matter that have their lives taken by people that obviously have some serious issues.I should say this behavior does not limit women. We have to do more to protect all that are at risk of loosing their lives at the hands of someone who is not the loving caring person they portray.I wish there was more we could do besides just writing the words of disgust and sadness. But it takes an act of god, because our laws suck to much to help anyone.

If this man had not been convicted of a crime, or even detained by the police, then why were his children taken away in the first place? Did the pervert dad live with his son, because this badly written article does not mention that? If he didn't live with him then again, why were his children not allowed to stay at home? I assume th epolice must have been closingon or he woudl not have done this. Too bad they didn't move more quickly if they suspected him of his wifes disapperance. BTW, speaking of bad writing, it was a 4 word sentence, not 3. "I am sorry, goodbye."

As a former Washington CPS worker I can tell you, without hesitation, that when children involved in a dependency action have a parent that is under investigation for murder, and when that parent also has been court ordered to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation, visits should only take place in a supervised at a secure location. Bringing children into a home that is that potentially dangerous is unthinkable and criminally negligent. And why was this potentially explosive case assigned to a contracted private agency. It is the state's duty to protect the most vulnerable of its citizens, and that duty should not be delegated by contract to agencies who are not trained to keep children safe in situations like this.

Josh Powell is a SOB!!! More and More parents are taking the lives of their own children either they don't want them, had enough of them, or like him if he can't have them no one can. I have two young children myself and this has brought plenty of tears rolling down my face. I think he should have never been able to see those boys seeing he was a suspect in his wifes disapearence! The courts think that a child shouldn't be deprived of their parent, well I beg to differ in cases like this. If the court would have nver ranted visitation these two precious yung boys would be here today. What is wrong with our laws! He took the easy way out because he knew he was guilty! I feel bad for the parents of Susan Powell because they won't ever be able to lay their daughter down to rest. She is out there some where thrown away like a piece of trash. I hope his Piece Of s**t father comes clean and tells them where her body is so she can be put to rest beside Charlie & Braden. GOD BLESS

Endless prayers for the Powell family. Stop blaming DSHS. Blame the court system. It's sad and unfortunate these things happen. and INEXCUSABLE. Just heart breaking over all. These two boys didnt even have a chance. I hope some laws change in honor of these boys. If the man wasnt allowed to have unsupervised visits he shouldnt have been awarded supervised visits at all. Even if the case manager wouldve been in the house or an entire swat team, he had planned what he planned. Nobody couldve stopped him. This all couldve been avoided if the laws were harsher. I pray for peace over the grandparents. I can't fathom dealing with this kind of shock. These boys are in heaven now, safe from anymore sick people. God bless this broken family!! Personally, I am so angry about this right now. I have lost a child who was stillborn and I have lost a wife through unexpected natural causes as well and I can't imagin the level of devastation the Powell family is suffering right now. This is extremely sad. Too bad this worthless human being took the easy way for himself. But he is such a chicken S*** Ba^^&*&( for taking his sons with him. It was enough that he killed his wife. Everyone knew it but he did a good enough job at hiding it but it was taking forever to prove it due to lack of actual evidence. But in my opinion WE shouldn't be blaming DSHS for what happened. How in the world was DSHS supposed to know what was going to happen at that house today???? Maybe if (some) parents started taking better care of their children.... DSHS wouldn't need to be a "third party parent" with thousands of cases. And instead give attention to the families who NEED it!!

If you're wondering what the State did wrong, she should have had their visitation at a neutral place. Especially since visitation was supervised. That is always the best solution. Given Granddad was a pervert, and dad was under suspciion for mom missing, the only smart solution was to meet at a neutral place. Now they're suppose to be smart. But i'm sure dad's attorney argued this issue. I may include him in the lawsuit. He of all people should have known his clients mental state. So i'm sue everyone I could possible. The only innocent parties in this case were the kids. All the adults involved failed those kids.

CPS in this state is the worst throughout the U.S. Other states have areas in CPS to supervise visit. All at risk cases are supervised at the facility or in a public place. Why would they send a lone CPS person to do a supervised visit at the home of a suspected killer. Unfortunatley this will not bring the children back or comfort the Cox family. Very, very sad. CPS needs to be revamped in this state, the supporting liberals have destroyed and costed more then one childs life. My prayers for the little boys and the Cox family are heartfelt, full of sorrow.

@guynoirprivatei you know not of what you speak. How can you claim this man's crimes are in any way related to any religion? This behavior is not the behavior of a man of faith; it is certainly not the behavior of a man who is living Christ's gospel. Jesus Christ taught that it would be better for a man to have a stone tied about his neck and be drowned in the depths of the sea than to offend (or harm) innocent children. Whatever the extent of his crimes, they were of his own doing. He alone is responsible. God gives all men freedom to choose their actions, whether right or wrong. It is upon this freedom that they are later judged according to his great mercy and justice. People who attempt to deflect responsibility for the horrible actions of depraved individuals are misguided.

guynoirprivatei , correct , tragedy for ALL INVOLVED and tragedy for you , for bringing Mormonism into this. It has absolutely nothing to do with Josh killing his wife, and now this. This case would have been judged NO DIFFERENT had he been any other religion. This is a case where a wife had made clear to friends and loved ones what her fears were, and when the worst came to pass- the husband didn't even have time to come up with an alibi that made sense. He then made matters worse for himself by the lack of concern he showed when she was" missing" He was judged by his actions all the way around, and would have been found no less suspicious if he were catholic , hebrew, etc. How very very ignorant of you. Unfortunately the evidence that would have convicted him from the very beginning would have been thrown out of court. Everyone on scene that morning knew it, and many who were close to the case. A legal loophole. Those kids however, are at peace with their mother.

I wait to hear what Josh's mother has to say since she recently defended him and I believe her ex. Let's hear from his siblings that profess that he was not capable of murder. He murdered two children today, two children he professed to love. Josh is evil and I honestly believe he got the beginning of evil from his father. I am sure his sister in Utah is devastated for her two precious nephews. May she take comfort knowing she tried to do the right thing supporting the Cox family in their efforts to protect Charlie and Braden. This is so very sad. RIP, precious children. I knew Josh Powell killed his wife, too bad he didnt say where he buried her. Now this!! He is a coward and deserved to die. Those children did not deserve to die. Now his father will have to live with the guilt of what his sick son did!! His father needs to tell what happened to Susan and where she is.Those sick SOB's knew what Josh did to his wife. I am so sorry for Chuck and Judy Cox. The pain of loosing their daughter and now their grandchildren. Susan may now be at peace since she has her boys. I will pray for the Cox family.

I think child protective services did as much as they could. He could have brought a fun to a public meeting place just as easy. The first call for the worker should have been to 9-11, but it would have made no difference. Josh has never been charged or arrested for anything. He may have killed his wife. Ok, he likely did. However, he was no threat to the boys until they started messing with him. They could have left him alone with no indication of the investigation until they swooped in and took him while the kids were in school. Investigators just had to have their face in the limelight.

michaelkitsap - it you who should be 'afraid'. You let this psycho influence your thinking and now you dare to sit here and defend him?? I don't care how 'put upon' Josh Powell thought he was.....to blow your own innocent children up is about as crazy as it gets. And you are as crazy and delusional as your buddy was! I hope you don't have access to any children!! My heart goes out to Susan's family who had such a hard battle to even see those two precious little boys. That battle was won, not in any court of law, but because Josh's own father turned out to be a disgusting pig. Only then did the authorities take any action to protect those children! I'll not blame the supervisor for today's visit....but to allow children to visit in the home occupied by the parent (who was ordered to have a polygraph and psych evaluation) was down right negligent! Thoughts and prayers are being sent to the family and friends of Susan Powell and those two precious boys.

He is selfish SOB and the religious fanatics who rant and rave that God had a plan are just as crazy as he is! God had nothing to do with this sick demented and despicable coward of a man! A man who murdered his wife and his kids. As for the worker: The worker did her job and she certainly couldn't beat the father up to get into the house. What was the worker supposed to do? She contacted her supervisor and that is all she could do. She would have been killed too by this man. This man was capable of doing anything and this just shows how desperate he was! For those who want to blame CPS and the judge etc. The blame is this man's blame and his alone. My heart goes out to Suan's parents. DNA check the bodies on the spot. He sounds like the type to kill two children and an adult, stuff them in the house, and walk out the back door with his kids and trigger the explosion.By the time we realize it's not him and his kids, he could be out of country. I hate being this cynical, and it sounds like something that only happens in the movies or on tv, but it happens in real life. If it is him and the kids, this is a tragedy. If it *Isn't*, it's a manhunt. Move fast either way, if it *isn't him, time is *critical*. And the only thing CPS did wrong was follow their own rules. they were required to drop the kids off. *Most* jobs like that *require* you to call your super and advise first and wait for instructions. Lay off the CPS worker, she's doing a better job of guiltripping herself than *we* ever will. I sincerely hope it was and wasn't him. if it was, my condolences to the family for their losses. If it wasn't him, my sincere condolences to those he killed, and get him.

"Whether he committed a murder-suicide is almost beside the point" It is the point. He MURDERED his wife. Everyone knows it just becuase they cant find her body shes innocent? Yes the judge has laws to abide by but also at the same time the judge can say visitation denied. The judge can do anything. I am trying to get custody of my niece and nephew who have been in custody for 18 months. BY LAW they are supposed to be in a forever home, but instead of granting us custody he gave the mother 60 more days to get her act together. So yes their are guidelines the judge should follow but he doesnt have to follow them. He should have said if you want visitation come to the DSHS office.

I'm not blaming the social worker, but it's hard to understand why she called her supervisor rather than 911. If you could strongly smell gas in a home where a potentially unstable man (and possible murderer) barred you from entry while taking in his children over whom he's in a custody battle, doesn't it seem more logical to treat it as an emergency? Perhaps emergency crews wouldn't have arrived in time and the outcome would have been the same, but still... Regardless, what a tragedy. Those poor children.

Shame on all you that lay the blame of this tragedy on the head of someone that was just doing their job. do any of you know that the law says that the person doing the supervision does not get to know the reason for the supervision? Do you know that the judge and the case supervisor (NOT the person doing the visitation supervision) decide where visits can happen. The visitation supervisor does not get to pick where it happens. They are TOLD where it happens. They make barely over minimum wage because of budget cuts. This country places kids in harms way ever single day, you are not very educated about what is happening in the system... Protective mother's loose their children everyday and things like this happen.... As far as the Constitutional rights NDAA took those so it is no longer valid in this Country.. This is tragic and these children were forced into this very dangerous situation by the system. This is not OK he should not of been allowed to see his kids at all... There are so many parents who do not abuse their kids, try to protect them and they are not allowed to see there children at all, so why did this creep get to see his. $893 Billion dollars goes into a system that puts kids in danger everyday!!! It assist in removing the parent who is protecting. THIS HAS TO STOP AMERICA NOW NOT ONE MORE KID NOT ONE MORE DAY!! ENOUGH!!!

Powell and his whole family is sick. This sick bastar* should have been in jail!!! Susan is dead, her children are dead. Where is Josh? He is a poor excuse for a man and a sick SOB!!!!! I grieve for the Cox family.

Komo does say that 3 bodies were found in the home but they also report that Josh Powell shut the door and locked the case worker out of the house shortly before the explosion

According to other news sources Josh had slammed the door in the caseworkers face and then she smelled gas and got away from the house and was calling the 911.

This is devastating!!! The state should have been having the supervised visits at the department not at his home! (I wonder if this has to do with the budget cuts!) Also, they were supervised visit's why did the SSW leave the boys in the house alone with him! Being a foster parent that should have NEVER happened!! No matter what the circumstance was. SSW should have taken the children outside with her/him or Josh should have gone outside with the SSW. My DEEPEST CONDOLENCES TO THEIR GRANDPARENTS!! I CAN ONLY IMAGE YOUR PAIN!!

Incredible. Since when does a supervised visit mean in the person's house? With the supervisor outside? What smoking? Cell phone? This is what gives Social Services a bad name in this or any other state. Who provided the supervision? State (DSHS)? County? Private Contract? This case has been so badly handled from the beginning to it's now tragic end.

KOMO says an adult, believed to be him, was also killed. THought I will say, you all are ready to convict someone without real proof. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. Unfortunately, many innocent people are locked away for things they didn't do due to circumstancial evidence. I feel very sorry for all the relatives of both families and classmates/friends of the children.

Those poor babies......what a mixed up world this is. Doesn't supervised visits imply that someone be present at all times? Sincerest sympathy to the Cox's.

Oh dear God. Chuck and Judy are at church right now, so I'm sure they don't know yet. My friend in Utah says they're saying he actually locked the court visitation person out of the house before the explosion and they're all gone.

If there is a hell I hope this guy goes straight to it. My heart goes out to the Cox's - their daughter is gone and now their grandsons. Hearbreak.

I cannot believe anyone else did this. Josh locked the door on the supervisor and moments later the house exploded. I pray that the boys were greeted in heaven by their mother and Josh made it safely to hell. Where was the protection for these precious boys. No one wanted to deny their father visitation. Interview Josh Powell's attorney. I cannot believe he did not know his client was crazy. The superviser will feel guilt forever but CPS should have had at least two supervisors at all times. Visitation should not have been at the house but in a public place. RIP, dear boys.

I don't know if this Josh Powell did this, but if he did, I would like a couple of hours alone with him before the police find him. He would be alive when they got him, but barely............and he would never walk again either.

Is there any doubt that Powell set this up to kill his two boys since he lost permanent custody of them to his in-laws. What a stnking Scumbag. I hope they find him and locate his wife then kill him, for that is what he deserves.
