VERLOT, Wash. – An 11-year-old girl was killed and her mother was injured after they were hit by falling ice at the Big Four Ice Caves in Snohomish County Saturday afternoon.

"It was huge," said Marina Yagolnikova, a witness who was downhill from the incident when it happened just before 3 p.m. "I saw a piece of ice just fall down, and people were just screaming, 'Oh, there's people up there!'"

Snohomish County Deputy Glen Bergstrom described the falling "chunk of snow and ice" as at least the size of a pickup truck cab.

The victims were not inside the caves, but were sitting on a rock at a nearby snowfield, said Bergstrom, who said the incident appears to have been a "fluke."

Investigators said the family is from the Lake Stevens area.  The mother, father, son and daughter were with two others on a day hiking trip.

The 11-year old girl was trapped, said Bergstrom, and while others went back down the trail to call 911, Yagolnikova said she and several others ran up to help.

"There were three guys, so they picked the little girl up," Yagolnikova said. "They were trying to carry her down, because they were afraid that another piece could fall down."

"She was coming in and out of consciousness. Sometimes she would hug the guy, sometimes she would just be out," Yagolnikova added.  At some point, the girl went completely unconscious.

A forest service officer was the first official on scene. Firefighters, paramedics, and search and rescue teams eventually arrived as well.

Witnesses on scene, which included a registered nurse and emergency responders, attempted to resuscitate the girl with CPR for more than an hour, but at 4:18 p.m., she was pronounced dead, said investigators.

The mother was able to walk back down the trail on her own power, sustaining just scrapes and bruises.

A helicopter airlifted the little girl's body to the Snohomish County Medical Examiner's office for autopsy and identification.

I have read other articles of adopted oriental children who died accidentally like this. People who adopt children from other countries needs to be careful about their willful, missionary intent to change the child's religion. The key here is that she was just baptized. Her death is sad that it had to happen, but also it may be good for her. If her soul is a true Buddhist one, then it is better to die than convert to another religion in her current life. This could be a very meritorious, pure death and she might be brought to the Buddhist heavens for this. Buddhism is not a western religion and the rules of western religions don't apply.

I was at the Big 4 ice caves the day before the accident. I noticed a picture of a cave I had taken of the area where they were. This was not the area where everyone goes, it was a small cave to the side 300 yards away. This area is on a hill so when the cave collapsed the pieces rolled on to them. This would not have happened in the main area because it is on flat ground. I would say it is safest to go to the main area and keep you distance.

lundgren is right. I have a feeling the family will try to sue the nearest fire department and EMTs for being late.

Such a sad tragedy, and my heart goes out to the family, but it's disapointing the deputy called this a fluke instead of taking the opportunity to educate the public. Ice falling in the mountains is never a fluke, that IS what ice does, rocks too. You don't stop and rest in fall zones. If you have to go into fall zones you move through them as quickly as is safely possible. I'm a climber, and I can't count the number of times I've seen even other climbers stoping unnecessarily in danger zones, seemingly oblivious to what is over their heads. The entire Cascade range is a big mass of crumbling rock and ice. You have to be aware of your surroundings and where you are relative to these hazards if you go into such places.

jkd_kickboxer is akin to the simulacrum called "klake" on the Seattle PI Horsey blog. A deliberately onerous piece of posting 'bot Python script designed for the SOLE purpose of generating textual response. See how well it works? Controversy creates traffic, traffic sells ad space. Do we see jkd_kickboxer down on Rainier in Renton standing alongside that little old lady protesting abortion in the blazing sun? Nope, he doesn't exist, the programmers create entire virtual ppl, have been for decades. Very effective too, I might add ;)

I've been going to the Big four Ice caves for 20 years, Ever time I go there are Ice falls from the cliffs above, you can here it echoing through the canyon, you don't have to be inside the caves to get hit by ice, I've seen car size pieces fly off the cliffs from above and real avalaches on occassion, I have always had a dread of the inside of the caves because I have seen them with little warning other than a few quick qracking sounds collaps ten feet in front of me, with a whoosh of freezing air and a earth rattling teeth chattering bang from the ice. The lesson is Natures Beauty is to be reviled in and respected from a distance teach your children this, and these things may happen alot less. My Heart goes out to the family and I will remeber her spirit in each of my visits. Karl

I'm sorry guys. That was insensitive. So I'll sing for you to make it up to you. "How insensitive. I must have seemed. When she told me that she loved me. How unmoved and cold. I must have seemed. When she told me so sincerely. Why she must have asked. Did I just turn and stare in icy silence. What was to say, what can you say, when a love affair is over. Now, she's gone away, and I'm alone. With a memory of her last look. Vague and drawn and sad, I see it still, all her heartbreak in her last look."

I don't even know where to start this comment. In a perfect world this tragedy doesn't happen. Welcome to reality. It's hard. It's ugly. And sometimes it bites. Incredibly horrific stuff happens. Bottom line... There is a family grieving. Worse is that there is a Mom who watched her angel pass. Unless you have been in her shoes you don't have the right to comment. Period. Seriously....Do you really have the right to comment on an an experience that I hope and pray you have never experienced? Really? I do. I have. And with ever fiber of my being I hope you never, ever, ever, EVER lose your child. And unless you are part of this horrific...SERIOUSLY WTF HORRIFIC club...you have no right to comment. Period. Mom. Dad. Siblings. I am so sorry. I am SO sorry. If I can help...kellam83@att.net. Sending Peace...and Strength...and Hope. Penny Sean's Mom 12/10/83-12/28/05

lucky4432, yeah it would be nice but the problem is no one is willing to pay the money to have a ranger there for so long of a time when there is many people in many miles of the wilderness. People are too worried about their pocket books and not each other anymore and services that might save a life are unwanted until it is their life on the line. I applaud you and your wife for trying to assist this poor girl and her mother. We need more people like you out there helping in these situations. This is a tragic story and my prayers go out to the whole family.

This little girl could have been saved and should of. We were up there and my wife was one of the ones assisting. It took so long for a ranger to get up there and when he did, basically had no real first aid items to assist. Everybody was under the impression that a helicopter was on the way and was minutes away however I would estimate one finally showed up an hour to perhaps even longer. For a destination that had probably an easy hundred people at the top there needs to be a ranger at the caves on any weekend and a medical box left at the top from maybe May to September. Not sure what the story about the other person as we only saw the little girl. Ken Bothell
