SEATTLE – Two men died after crashing into the back of a fire department medic unit on northbound Interstate 5 Saturday.

The accident happened in near Mercer Street at about 2:45 a.m.

Witnesses say a silver BMW traveling at high speed clipped an Acura sedan and spun out of control. The BMW then slammed into the back of a moving Seattle Fire Department medic unit.

The BMW driver, a 24-year-old Tumwater man, and his 23-year-old passenger from Lynnwood died at the scene.

The driver and passenger of the medic unit were transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with non-life threatening injuries. One person in the Acura suffered minor injuries.

Police say alcohol appears to have been a factor in the crash, but the investigation continues.

FYI Victims of Drunk drivers do include the family that is left behind by the individuals. I am one of these said victims and have been since the day I was born, so again the comments that will forever remain here on this website disrespecting and ignoring these victims is despicable and disgusting. To those that have supported my comments thank you, and for those that continue to assume the facts know this: I am not even going to read any of your responses or post again on the subject. Your blatant generalizations and assumptions make you look like an.... well you know the saying. Anyway the words "ignorant" before and "holes" after to = YOU! RIP & Peace be with all Victims affected by the tragedy.

My dad is a firefighter/paramedic and every day he works I get nervous he could potentially lose his life because of people doing stupid things. My heart goes out to the families affected. Even the BMW who caused the crash, I hope their families are okay and dealing with this unfortunate event.

@dorimonsonfan, there is one LARGE difference between what these guys did and what the Mountianeers do. The Mountaineers do not put innocent bystanders in harm's way. I have been a Mountaineer, drag racer and a bull rider and agree with what you say about living life to the fullest and all of that, but DO NOT be an idiot on a public road and put innocent bystanders in harm's way.

Parents--please remind your family to be safe and drive smart everytime they walk out the door. We have to help our kids stay safe. Young people think they know it all, They don't. It is our job as parents to remind them.

As the mountaineers would say, at least they died having fun doing what they loved, living life to the fullest and taking risks. You can't live life from a basement behind a keyboard. Rip to the young men. I can't say I've never made any stupid mistakes, but who can right?

Death by any reason is alway a tragedy. Regardless of the reason for anyone dying, someone really loves that person and will have to edure the pain. My prayers go out to the ones living that have to manage to get through the loss.

@ramac7716.... Come on now, that comment was not necessary. I have a very nice sports car and have never raced it. I do care about other people, including those that don't have. Besides, just because they had a BMW does not mean that they are recklass. We also have a BMW for my office and we are not wreckless in any way.

Let's just be thankful nobody else got killed. Before you go off writing such disrespectful & careless comments, why don't you consider the families & friends that are impacted by this tragedy? Would if it was one of your friends? Pretty sure you wouldn't be saying the things you are saying. Think before you speak. RIP guys.

Actually, it was not a good night. The article fails to mention that an innocent person died in this crash. The driver hit my cousin who was on his bike.

mrgoat --It DOES appear that the driver was speeding. Read the first sentence of the 3rd paragraph. And as far as it "appearing" that alcohol was involved, police are pretty good at noticing these things. They have seen it s few times. You are correct we should be sorry for the families, to bad they didn't think of their families. And to angrynerdsr0ck As to your question, I don't drink.

mrgoat.. it's what we HAVE to say when we find, say, an open container of booze or the smell of intoxicants on them.. It's pretty much a shoe-in that the driver was loaded. It's the same thing as when a bank robber is caught on video sticking up a bank and then admits it later.. we still have to call him a SUSPECT. No respect for scumbags like this that put the rest of us in danger.

trifamax: did the article say anything about racing? did it mention anything about the Acura speeding? did it say anything about witnesses saying they were racing? if they were, dont you think the witnesses would tell the state patrol and wouldnt it be stated here in the article? again, you're making assumptions. you don't even know who the driver is. what if it was a 40 year lady on her way home. would you say she's "racing." Read the article one more time without that "racer" mentality. i'm not just blowing smokes. i know who was in the acura.

Thank you King 5, for getting SOME of the FACTS from this story correct! To everyone rushing to judgment please hold your opinions about the mitigating factors in the case until the SPD releases their investigation. You may or may not realize that these young men had families and friends that are grieving the unexpected loss of their young lives. I am happy that no one else was seriously injured in the accident, but again your comments making assumptions and drawing conclusions to what caused the accident are hurtful and unnecessary, and so far it does appear that the driver may or may not have been driving recklessly. One thing I know for certain is recorded in the article itself. “Police say alcohol APPEARS to be a factor in the crash, but the investigation continues.” No one truly knows yet if alcohol was a variable, and whether the driver was the one drinking. So again please hold your opinions to yourself until more FACTS are brought to light!
