SEATTLE -- They're a breed with a bad reputation, but many animal lovers say pit bulls just need a little help controlling their number and keeping them with loving families. A new program is helping spay and neuter pit bulls in King County for free.

When Indigo showed up as a stray in Myra Gudge's neighborhood, the mother of two knew she had to help.

"We were afraid if we took her to a shelter at Thanksgiving that her days would just be numbered, especially with being a pit bull breed," said Myra.

Weeks passed and no one came for the pit bull, but soon the dog claimed them.

"She's just a very loving member of the family," said Myra.

She hoped to get Indigo spayed immediately, but she postponed it after getting laid off from work. Then she heard about a new program the Seattle Humane Society is offering thanks to a $50,000 dollar grant from Petsmart charities.

It covers the cost for 750 pit bull, or pit bull mixes, to be spayed, neutered and vaccinated for free.

The breed makes up roughly 30 percent of animals typically found in shelters, and the Humane Society hopes this will help.

"We are already seeing fewer dogs in shelters across the board because of effective spay/neuter programs. So we think if we can just give this breed a little bit of extra help, we can help with that issue," said Rhonda Manville, Humane Society.

Myra says it's the right thing to do for Indigo and other dogs like her.

"This is really an opportunity for good owners to do the right thing by the dog," said Myra.

More than 50 pit bull owners have already signed up to take advantage of the free spay/neuter program. To schedule an appointment for your pit bull, call (425) 649-7560.

man creates pit bull...pit bull acts as was intended...man blames pit bull.....people like truthbetold need to be "gassed out of existence"...i would save the life of a pit bull long before a human like him. pit bulls were bred as fighters..so they have a superior athleticism and stubborn ferocity. but this energy can be controlled and directed in the right hands. someone who has actually taken the time to understand them. being so high strung, they just need an outlet, and when theyre not afforded that they become bored and frustrated. they dont just choose to kill for the sport...thats a human trait. i love taking my pit into the city and watching the ignorant ones give him a wide berth, while the informed are more than ready to show the love they know the breed is famous for. stop watching the news and get informed (a concept im sure you havent thought about)..google "find the pit bull"...youll be surprised at how many breeds get mistaken for pits..thus inflating bite statistics

The average weight of a Pomeranian is about 4 pounds, and they are not thought of as a dangerous breed. Note, however, that they were bred to be watchdogs! The baby's uncle left the infant and the dog on a bed while the uncle prepared her bottle in the kitchen. Upon his return, the dog was mauling the baby, who died shortly afterwards. You Pit Bull lover that claim the rest of us are uninformed, really need to check your own facts. Rotts are #1 and Pits are #2 in fatal atacks against humans. Were all happy that YOURS is the perfect dog but the numbers speak for them self. "http://www.dogbitelaw.com/PAGES/statistics.html"

Yes, I really appreciate the comments here from people who says pits should be gassed, they are unpredictable killers, able to leap 6ft. tall fences in a single bound, have bionic jaws that lock down on their prey never to release, and the many other informed opinions people so generously share about the breed. Maybe, juuuusssst maybe if you really knew the breed and juuuuuussst maybe if you had even the slightest idea of what you were talking about, possibly you would be worth listening to. Until then, stick a sock in it and comment on the subjects you actually have done your homework on and leave pitbulls alone. You wouldn't want a pitbull you say? Well they wouldn't want you for an owner either.

I know a few pits that are real nice dogs however I would never own one. They are unpredictible at best. If they are not out lawed all together I think they should put a law in affect that says you can not have more than one dog if you have a pit. They seem to do the most damage when they are in a pack. This program is fine however it isnt going to change much. Responsible dog owners usually are not the ones that have problems no matter what breed and more than likely they have already had their pet attered. Maybe stronger consequences for the owners might help.

For those that think that this is just the owners that make them bad, remember the story of The Frog and The Scorpion. One of these dogs got loose from their owner's yard near my kid's daycare and aggressively engaged my kid and me. I was able to be bigger a louder than it wanted to deal with, but had I not noticed the rogue dog when I did, it was a biscuit away from my kid and it could have been bad... If you want protection for your house, get a shotgun. It won't go off by itself. It has no mind of its own. You are in total control of it. You can lock it up where it will not hurt others until the time is right for that to be considered. Boooooo Pit Bulls. HK

pitbullover? The fact that you have three says it all. We have seen time and time again people who have two, three or more of these animals- breed the bageesus out of them and keep them in non secured yards. Even a six foot fence isn't enough to hold these dogs! You are right, any dog and every breed is capable of biting and the biting stats prove it. But we are talking about people and innocent pets being mauled to death. These dogs don't bite, they maul and kill. I've seen people get attacked in our neighborhood and the last pit we saw around here was after one attacked the mail carrier. And it was always some idiot from one of a few houses who always had a pit or more. An ex marine samaritan went over to the dog that attacked the mail carrier and shot it. Killed it. Haven't seen a pit in the neighborhood since. And guess what? People walk the sidewalks and children are out playing now! The owners say the same thing- "My dog never did anything like that before."

Thank God. Leave the breeding to responsible breeders instead of those idiots looking for a quick buck and abusive breeding practices!

For one you all who do not care for them and do not want them to exist are racist against the breed. Its not the breed it is the owner. It is all in how you raise them I have 3 pitbulls they have been the best dogs I have ever had and the most loyal dog you could think of having. So if you have never had one shut your mouths about the breed. Any dog could bite some one when i was 12 a regular ol house dog chased me on my bike and made me wreck and i got hurt pretty bad but do you see me talking trash about that dog no all dogs can do that.

gee....probably won't help. For example: All the dirtbags that own these dogs in the South end of Seattle either don't have licenses, or their dogs have scars from fighting and so they would never take their dogs in for scrutiny by the Humane society......

This is an awesome program. I think the breed should be gassed out of existence, but this will do for now.
