SEATTLE-- As work progresses on a tunnel to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct in Seattle, homeless campers are being told they can no longer sleep under the viaduct because it's being demolished.

The seattlepi.com reports transients are being swept Monday from a section of the viaduct near Pioneer Square.

The executive director of the Seattle-King County Coalition on Homelessness, Alison Eisenger, estimates more than 100 people sleep under and around the highway, but one city outreach worker estimates 10 to 50.

Outreach workers made three visits in the past month and contacted 11 viaduct dwellers, offering shelter and other services. Two took up the offer.

We are a very bad society to not take care of our own. We are a very bad society because we are allowing people good people to be homeless. As a country we should not have 1 single person homeless! Why answer me why are we a society that is allowing this hard cruel punishment to happen????????? We are all going to answer to our creator for this bad very bad sin. We must house, clothes, feed and help to educate those who are in a less desirable situation than what they are actually in or have had a stroke of bad luck and have put them in kind of a bad way. What has happened to our great society of love? We must come together and help our brothers and sisters in need at all costs until they get back on their feet. What do you all think about what I have just said? In my opinion we need our society to become fully homed, to become a society of non - homlessness - once this happens we will be considered the greatest nation on earth. Greg.

I agree with rob2tall 100% ! Sports Stadiums are NOT more important than housing for the homeless.

Perhaps before voters in Seattle vote to build another billion $ sports facility they ought to consider voting on a billion $ housing project and get the homeless residents off the streets of Seattle, provide them with job training as a requirement for housing, mandate a no drug, alcohol or tobacco atmosphere and make it a crime to refuse the housing and treatment issues for drug related homelessness. Get housing for the homeless! Those who are homeless due to economy could use some unemployment funds to offset the rent.Surly the citizens of Seattle have enough compassion to care about something other then a new Kingdome?
