SEATTLE -- If you're living without heat, you are not alone.

Furnace repair companies say emergency service calls to homes have skyrocketed with the cold weather snap.

Ballard Natural Gas says their "no heat" calls have tripled this week compared to the week before.

Many times the cause is improper maintenance. But during these cold weather spells, furnaces have to kick it up a notch just to maintain a home's normal temperature.

About 15 percent of the company's calls require a return visit on a different day. Some replacement parts can take several days to be delivered, which means a homeowner may have to live without heat longer than they would like.
