The City of Gold Bar is working to recover $450,000 stolen by from the city’s bank accounts over the past year by hackers.
The Everett Herald reports the city has recovered about $230,000 and is working with the bank to get the rest.
The case is being investigated by the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office in Oregon as part of a multi-state financial fraud ring.
The city said it first noticed a problem last November when someone tried unsuccessfully to pass fake checks from city accounts. The city closed out that account, but the hackers managed to get into the new accounts the city set up.
Gold Bar has been in deep financial trouble, with the mayor suggesting in July that the city could be broke by the end of the year and may become an unincorporated part of Snohomish County.
