TACOMA, Wash. - The case of five emaciated horses found abandoned in a Pierce County forest has prompted the Humane Society of the United States to offer a $2,500 reward for information leading to arrests and convictions.

In a statement, the animal welfare organization says it appears the animals were afraid to leave the area where they had been dropped off, and could have been stranded as long as two weeks.

It said the horses discovered Nov. 12 on a logging road near Elbe were cold, hurt and "horribly malnourished."

The HSUS says two of the horses are about 15 years old; another is suspected to be pregnant and a fifth was euthanized.

The group's Washington state director, Dan Paul, says struggling horse owners can turn to rescue groups, online adoption programs or even humane euthanasia.

Abandoning animals in Washington is a misdemeanor punishable by a maximum 90 days in jail and $1,000 fine.

Pierce County Animal Control is investigating.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Supervisor Tim Anderson at 253-798-7387 or 253-798-7003.

This whole family needs to be found and arrested. Their cats and dogs to the animal shelter. In jail they need to be cleaned up, fresh clothing, good food and rest. They all need to be seen by a doctor and a dentist and kindly social worker. Immunization etc. provided and If children present, an appropriate teacher brought in. Their neighbors and local church need to be advised of their home situation and encouraged to help. Someone needs a job and certainly one can be found, or provided. After an appropriate time in jail as the judge will rightly decide, they might be released on probation with a profound appology for all of us who didn't intevene before they turned to crime and released their poor starving horses.

I wish more horse owners were aware of the groups and agencies available to help. Also, horse owners, many people post in various places for co-owning or co-leasing their horses. Doing this helps both the person answering, to be able to have access to a horse, who may not be able to afford sole ownership, and it also helps owners who may be going through a rough time financially.

It would be useful if HSUS could provide photographs of the horses - profile of body, and closeup of face. Perhaps somebody will recognise the horses. Just knowing that 5 horses were found abandoned doesn't give people much to work with.
