ARLINGTON, Wash. – With fatigue setting in among those involved in the landslide recovery mission, sometimes a hot meal is a much needed boost.
“We wanted to help. That’s why we’re here,” said Kurt Rumens, owner of Washington-based Travis Industries. “We rounded up employees this week and started to serve meals.”
Rumens runs a wood stove manufacturer, but has a big heart for helping out. After arriving on Friday, his employees who are connected with the Red Cross started setting up kitchens and grills and prepared more than 500 meals of hot food outside of the command center in Arlington.
“We’re 50 miles away, but these are our neighbors,” he said. “This is important.”
Some of the meals are being delivered to crews on the front lines, while hundreds more are feeding the scores of state and local officials coordinating the effort.
“We’re all working together,” said Keith Acre with the American Red Cross. “The Southern Baptists made breakfast. These guys are making lunch and dinner. It’s great.”
Organizations are putting together plans to ensure the hot meals will be served for several more days.
