RENTON, Wash. - They thought they had it all taken care of. The Brown family planned to have the most efficient, sustainable, green built  home in Renton.

Kay Brown suffers from a chemical sensitivity disorder so all the materials had to be top notch to insure high quality indoor air quality.

They invested a lot of money to make sure they had all the right products. Everything was in place, except the contractor. The Browns chose one who came highly recommended but turned out to be a nightmare.

The Browns say he was slow, damaged their expensive floors and other surfaces and failed to use the sustainable green building practices he promised.

Experts who examined the work said much of it had to removed, re-installed or repaired. The costs began to skyrocket and the contractor refused to make it right.

Just before the Browns slipped into total despair, members of the local green building community stepped in. Concerned about the reputation of their building techniques, they took on the job on their own time and are fixing the home for free.

20 bucks says they hired the cheapest guy. You get what you pay for and if the contractor was "good" or "green" then he would have had references to go look at or call people. Being a quality Gen. Contractor myself I would absolutely love to see the actual contract for this. Not saying the home owners deserved this as no one does especially in there own home. Seems like it would fall under non professional workmanship fallowed by a law suit. At least they got what they wanted from he 2nd company that did it for free/publicity and a tax right off...all is well that ends well.

Truly a blessing to see homeowners be green-aware in their remodels. As it catches on, the DPD may be able to put rules in place for every house to be remodeled only with green materials. So we may outlaw stuff that is not net neutral.

Maybe they should have done more research before they hired the guy?
