COVINGTON, Wash -- A Covington teenager suffered a heart attack in the woods last Monday. His friends, using CPR and some quick thinking, saved his life.

Brandon Hopper collapsed near Greenwater on Monday, and after more than 2 hours of CPR, he's made a miraculous recovery.

Kierstyn Frederick and Austin Bourbonnie say they both learned CPR in school. Never did they think they'd need it to save their friends life.

"Honestly, I think I did what any old friend should do,” says Bourbonnie.  "As soon as everything happened, everything that I remember learning started clicking in,” says Frederick. “It was a natural reaction I had to do it.”

19 year old Hopper suffers from a genetic heart condition but had never gone into cardiac arrest before Monday.  The three friends were hiking in the woods taking pictures of elk when Hooper fell to the ground.  He wasn't breathing.

"He's not responding to me he's not responding to any of us, and I didn't know what to think. I was freaking out,” says Frederick,

"I'm thinking I might have held my best friend in my arms for the last time,” says Bourbonnie. He started CPR while Frederick went to flag down a car since their cell phones had no reception.

They continued breaths and chest compressions for 25 minutes until paramedics arrived and took over.

"I can't stop appreciating how many right things happened,” says Brandon’s mom, Michelle Hooper.

His parents say, on the way to Harborview, Hopper got more than 2 hours of CPR and shocked with the defibrillator 8 times.

"They're always going to be on our Christmas card list, and they're going to be friends of our family forever,” says Troy Hopper, Brandon’s father, of the two friends.

The Covington teenager isn't out of the woods yet, but doctors removed his breathing tube today and he's alert and talking.

"Seeing Brandon in the hospital now, I'm really happy he's still here,” says Frederick.

She took CPR in high school. Bourbonnie says he flunked it in 7th grade, but between the two of them, they knew enough to save their friend's life.

Hopper's parents say doctors tell them the longest documented case where a person has received CPR and made a full recovery was 96 minutes. They’re still checking a few details, but if he makes a full recovery it could be a record.

We are Brandons grandparents, unfortunately during the excitement of all the events going on during this time we were unable to get the names of all of the responders. You can all be sure we appreciate the work they do. If any one knows any of these people you can give them a genuine thanks from the Hopper family. You should give them a hug also.

Awesome story. We should all take CPR. I wonder if Elisa wanted to say "he's not out of the woods yet", when he clearly is out of the woods as far as location goes.

"klondiko said on May 21, 2011 at 11:45 AM Wonderful! Why did it take 2 hours to get to Harborview? New hospital in Enumclaw" The reason is the hospital in Enumclaw is not a level 1 trauma center. Harborview is the only level 1 trauma center in the area is the one best equipped to handle this type of situation. I am a former firefighter/EMT, and before learning what all that entails, I always asked the same question. Medic 1& Airlift NW both have their HQs at Harborview and are (or were) are overseen by Dr. Michael Copass. This brilliant man has taken emergency services to a whole new level...but I am biased as he oversaw my training as an EMT as well. To the kids, great job! I hope you are around should something befall me (god forbid). You restore my faith in humanity as well as give me hope in our youth today!

One correction: It's "Hopper" not "Hooper." ( And I would know that because I know the Hopper family.) :) That aside, I'm so proud of Kierstyn (I know her from school) and Austin. As stated in earlier comments, they exemplify what a true friend is. They easily could have given up but were persistent. His cousin said that he's doing better, that he's even laughing now!

Kierstyn and Austin-you two exemplify what a true friend is! I'm sure that your families and friends are so proud of you-but so are the rest of us who read about what you did and how hard you worked to save your friend! You are truly heroes and you did everything right. I wish for long, happy lives for all three of you!

Incredible story. Brandon surely picked his friends well. Great job by these 2 kids who kept their col and saved a life. And, great job by the paramedics, who the story should have named. Everyone should take a basic red cross first aid course and a CPR class. Whose life could you save?

of course this would occur in the Seattle/King County area where aggressive citizen CPR training and the world renowned Medic One system have produced the highest cardiac arrest survival rates in the nation.

This story is awesome. I am so glad he is doing well. It brings tears to my eyes because it also makes me remember that I was lucky enough to get a few more years with my dad thanks to his pacemaker shocking his heart for an estimated 90 times by the time he made it to a hospital. This was after he decided to camp by himself and an untold of amount of time before someone happened to hear his cries for help as they passed by his camper. God sometimes gives us these amazing blessings and I hope that these three teens realize just how blessed they all are. I hope Brandon recovers completely. God bless you all!

A true story of never giving up. It is also a story of the importance of what we teach in our schools will have relevance in our daily lives--even for those who flunk. Bourbonnie and Frederick are true heros.

I can't help but think how easy it would have been to just 'give up.' especially with the longest recorded cpr recovery being 24 minutes shorter... the fact that the paramedics didn't just "call it" is a huge testament to them. i love to hear stuff like this.

Wow!! This story makes me so happy. Awesome... Every year for 17 years I've had First aid training. The last 10 have been taught by the same guy. He is a former State trooper that has given CPR 14 times in his career and saved 0 lives. This is a rare treat right here folks.
