TACOMA, Wash. -  A man fleeing from police was struck and killed on Interstate 5 near Tacoma early Thursday morning..

The Washington State Patrol says that about 1 a.m. a Fife Police officer pulled over a driver suspected of drunken driving.

A check showed that a passenger  in the car, 45-year-old Michael R. Hallberg of Tacoma, was wanted on arrest warrants for assault and eluding police.

The Patrol says Hallberg jumped out of the car and tried to run across the freeway near the Tacoma Dome.  He was struck by two vehicles and killed.

"As they (officers) were opening the door to get the passenger out, he jumped out and ran across the freeway, all lanes of traffic southbound" said Trooper Brandy Kessler. "He walked up the median a short ways and then attempted to pass the northbound lanes and was struck by a vehicle."

Detectives say the first vehicle to hit Hallberg left the scene. They're now searching for the car described as a dark green sedan with possible front end damage. The driver of the second vehicle remained on the scene as a witness.

"Right now the State Patrol is doing the investigation," said Kessler. "We're asking any witnesses out there to please call the State Patrol."

Kessler said the driver of the vehicle stopped by the Fife police was taken into custody "for DUI."

Hit and run driver must have had something he didn't want the police to see. I'm pretty sure you aren't at fault if some idiot runs out onto the freeway in front of you and you hit them.

Mike may not have been the perfect man, but he was an awesome cousin. I used to ride on his shoulders walking to the store. We used to make forts in the corn in a field in Sumner, and sit in there and eat raw corn all day.

If he was such a loving father why was he not at home with his kids? Why was he out drinking and driving, endangering other loving parents lives that could have been out on the road heading home from work? I'm just glad no INNOCENT people were hurt by his reckless behavior. It just amazes me that some people never want to grow up and obey the law and set a good example for their children.

And why is someone that breaks the law considered "Cool"? That's what is wrong with this world. It is not "Cool" to break the law and endanger the lives of innocent people by getting behind the wheel of a car and run from the police. People that think that is "Cool" need to find some new heroes.

Such a nice guy who assaults people? He must have been pretty smart too, running across a major freeway. Darwin at it's best. I wonder how many "Mommies" there were.... My guess, 3.

dairyqueen123: If that was my father I would not announce it. I would be ashamed to have a criminal for a parent. My dad disowned his own brother for getting drunk and hitting a lady and killing her unborn baby. Just because it's family doesn't mean you have to support them when they are breaking the law. And since when does a "Good Guy" have warrants out for assault and eluding the police!?

So hopefully I can help clarify this a little. the victim stated above was a passenger in the vehicle that was stopped for DUI. The victim fled while Fife PD officers were attempting to arrest him on unrelated warrants. Please have some respect for the victims family, no one deserves to perish in such a greusome way and then have their dirty laundry aired in such a public forum. Our sincerest regrets go out to the family of Mr. Hallberg.

Yes, he broke the law. Yes he may have made bad choices and gone the wrong way a few times in his life, but it's completley disrespectful to speak the way you all are about this man on a website. He has three children who have seen all that you've said. Please remember that although he may have screwed up, these children will have to live without their father for the rest of thier lives and they're just trying to grasp that fact right now... think of those kids before you make your judgements so public. You should all be ashamed of yourselves for not being able to respect that this was a real person, who had a family he left behind. N Hallberg-my thoughts and prayers are with you, I hope you will be okay in dealing with this. T Hallberg, as my little brothers best friend, I truely hope you are doing okay. Please know that we're all thinking of you right now.

deniseh1006 you sound stupid! ignorant is a better way to put it you think his kids had a choice when their father was on King5? and how do you know that his warrants werent from a while back and he is tryin to get back on track and change his life? i feel sorry for people like you because you talk all this mess until something devastating happens in your family and then you are going to want people to sympathize for you! thats great about your dad disowning his brother... to each his own.. but you dont think your dad would be at all upset if his brother died tomorrow? i call BS you obviously have nothing better to do than sit there and feel sorry for yourself so you just put others down... really i pitty you!

ok I will give some sane nonnasty advice..... if you are related/friends with the deceased stay away from message boards, the radio and the news... It is an awful enough event without having the media frenzy stir it up

WAA WAA WAA!! What a bunch of bleeding hearts! He broke the law, he had warrants, he decided to run, he died. Here is a thought. Maybe if he didn't break the law, didn't decide to ride with a drunk driver, and lead a law-abidding life he would be able to spend the rest of his life with his kids. I do not feel sorry for anyone who breaks the law. The way I look at it he just saved me and every other taxpayer thousands of dollars in legal fees. How much you want to bet his family will try to sue because their so-called "wonderful man" died being chased by the cops. Families like that will.....bet their on welfare too!

Wow! what a horrible bunch of mean and nasty garbage on here. I am sorry that these children lost there father. Love knows no boundries...and it is not for anyone here to abuse the love of those kids for their father..when they are devestated by the loss of him... allow them time to grieve....because they ARE his children. I have a nephew who was for many years addicted to Meth....thank GOD hes been clean for more than 5 years now. I remember a time when he was runnig from the police..right on to I-5. I stood helpless...listening to car after car honking at him as he darted about..Drunk and High on drugs....I thank GOD he was ok....but I too seen comment after comment on a blog post..when media announced the incident. What a painful time. I pray that they also find the person that left the scene of the accident..and that the driver who stopped...Is ok. That has to also be devestating to him/her. For all parties involved...My thoughts and my sincere prayers are with you

I agree with whoever suggested that family members not read these messages, why put yourself through that? Also, I don't think being a passenger in a DUI car with some legal past warrants death, I am usually the first to blame the perpetrator and not the victim, but in this case, it sounds like a tragedy, a stupid thing to do, ut not worth dying for...

Michael was divorced and didn't live with his kids. In fact he lived in Pennslyvania. I met him at Emerald Queen Casino on the night that Michael Jackson died. Michael was sitting next to me on a slot machine and telling me all about his son graduating and how proud he was. He told me his daughter dropped him off there because the next morning he was flying out to Pennslyvania. I didn't know Michael as the criminal the paper tried to make him out to be. After the accident, I heard that Michael actually left the car so the driver would not be caught with the prescription narcotics that were in the car. Michael may have been a lost soul that wasn't heading in the right direction, but he could have been saved and had a good rest of his life. I' m really sad for the family and the fact that there hasn't been a funeral for Michael. There hasn't even been an obituary. He deserves at least that. I miss him everytime I go to EQ casino because that is where I always saw him.:(vilages ab.r
