GRANITE FALLS, Wash. - If anyone needs their help, Granite Falls firefighters are ready to roll.

The fire departmart serves some 8,000 residents in and around town.

For the last 20 years, Rick Hjelle has been their fire chief. But after what happened last week, Chief Hjelle is on paid leave.

There had long been rumblings the chief had a problem. That all came to a head Friday when he showed up to the scene of a pretty serious crash near his house. Firefighters who answered the call say the chief smelled like alcohol.

Friday evening, the department's board of commissioners put the chief on leave, pending an investigation into what it calls "serious allegations".

Sources familiar with the investigation say the allegations include abuse of prescription painkillers and alcohol.

"They're, ya know, supposed to protect and serve," said parent Alice Spurling, "and they should be held to a little bit higher standard."

Spurling's daughter Jada suffers from seizures and frequently her family has to call for help.

"He's not only putting our lives at risk, ya know, anybody elses [too]," said Spurling.

If the allegations are true, Spurling says the chief should lose his job. But others aren't so sure.

"There's a lot of things that can bring a person down over their life... a lot of influences, and to be able to fight through that and recover from that and come back would be a good thing," said Mike Foss.

Chief Rick Hjelle did not return phone calls seeking comment for this story.

We're told the investigation is being conducted by the fire department's insurance company.

Come on King5... There is entirely too little information in this article / video to be doing a story about it... Komo and Kiro aren't covering it... There was no mention of him being given any sobriety tests to include a breathalyzer... Granted, you might not have all the details, and that is why the story shouldn't be published until you do... Go into any bar and have a shot of whatever or a beer, or consume the same at home, then wait an hour... My Vegas bet says you will smell like alcohol... But upon inspection by law enforcement, which, again wasn't mentioned in this article, you would be cleared... There was also no mention of him stumbling around or slurring words or acting like an idiot like all drunk people do... There was also no indication in this story about whether he DROVE HIMSELF to the scene... Some people do act responsible these days... This is a serious lack of detail on the part of King5, and I hope it gets cleared up... Do SOME investigating please

Okay, so the guy has a problem with pain killers and alcohol... Is he a good chief otherwise?? Then he sould not lose his job. Put him on leave and send him to rehab... pending the success of that he should be able to return to his job. He's also a person, not just chief.

Gotta disagree with supermason. If this Chief truly has a problem with pain killers and alcohol, he should not be working in a job where his decisions affect the lives and safety of the publc and the firefighters he directs. IF he truly has these problems, maybe a temporary leave of absence to get through rehab is in order. But he SHOULD NOT remain in charge of a fire department. Get through rehab... then go back to work.

Oops! Sorry supermason! I meant to say I AGREE with you!...

Chief Hjelle has worked his tail off for this town! He has done a fantastic job for years, and is being absolutely railroaded. I imagine some snide, petty pos who wants his job, or wants him out of the way so the UNION can have their way negotiating their contract, costing this county more tax dollars. Chief Hjelle keeps things fair and has our best interests at heart The reason our fire department is so good, providing such peace of mind to all is not because our Chief is a drunk! It's because HE DOES AN OUTSTANDING JOB!

Lets face it, For the past 35 yrs that I have been aware of, Dist. 17 has had a problem with firefighters drinking "on the job" namely "the Cheif". Even before Hjelle was cheif this was an issue that was just tolerated "because the cheif was a good man". Maybe so but that doesn't fix the problem nor alleviate the risk to the public. Dist. 17 needs to clean house and have a" no tolerance " rule. There are some very good firemen in Granite Falls and some very professional and hard working people there that deserve better than to be known as a drunk club. I am sure there is a clean and sober one who could do the cheif job as good or better than Hjelle and not risk the dist. or the public. Hjelle , being a public servant and caring about his districts welfare, having access to all the help one could need, should have checked himself in to rehab and saved himself and his district this humiliation and public ridicule. Stiff upper lip Dist. 17, you are better than this!
