Federal Way police officers facing budget cuts

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - There are concerns that gains made in the battle against crime in Federal Way may be impacted by budget troubles.

A new report shows a spike of violent crime has dropped with an increase in patrols. Assault crimes are down 57 percent at the city's Transit Center and down 21 percent in the downtown area.

"Unlike before, shootings we haven't heard anything," says Agnes Lemapu, who was attending a church picnic in the city's Steele Lake Park. "It has been really nice to have them (police patrols) around because we feel a lot of safety with them around."

But, just a heightened patrols are paying off budget cuts may force officer layoffs.

Eighteen Federal Way Police jobs are in jeopardy because of a budget shortfall. While other city departments are also facing reductions, the police department may be forced to take the brunt of the cuts.

The city of Lynnwood is also facing similar troubles. The police union there says a projected $21 million deficit may force a third of the city's police officers to find a new job.

Just checked with the Vegas odds makers to see what the odds are that Bobknows is a lifelong prison inmate and the response was said to be even odds. Not a good bet if you wanted to make money. And if cops are so bad what about Afghanistan or Western Pakistan where there is no strong government. Oh yes that is where the Taliban rule and they are certainly not the cops are they Bobknows. For those who think the police are revenue collectors how about not running red lights and driving ten over the speed limit. Oh yes thats right, your rights are being violated.

i live in federal way. i for one will not be sad to see 18 police jobs cut. they have already been reduced to the role of tax collector. even if you do call them they don't do anything.....but drive with a busted head light and boy watch out.

More government jobs is not the answer either. Sorry, but Obama doesn't seem to understand that government jobs don't create money, they take it. Just as printing more money doesn't create more wealth, hiring new public employees may get you guaranteed votes, but they don't contribute to the GDP. America was a dream that was too good to last.

More cops more cops safer better right? Everybody lets just sacrifice our liberty for security more and more...hell, if we get one thousand cops on duty at the same time, it wil be great, because as long as everybody is safe. Police stat here we come. And a big reason for increased security is because too many people are feeling the effects of the out of control government spending and looting of our dollar that they feel like they have nothing else but to retaliate. More police is not the answer people.

Maybe its just me, but isn't Federal Way one of the normal locations for COPS to ridealong to get footage for the show. FedWay,Pierce County, Lakewood,and Yakima are the only locations the COPS crews go because that is where all the action is. The more police the better for that community.

And there wouldnt be need for any cuts if the Federa Reserve wasnt a fiat paper currency backed only debt people, while the feds print and print and print. ABOLISH the FEDERAL RESERVE AND IMF

More or less police isnt exactly the answer, hell if humans could just all learn to get rid of greed and hate, there would be no need for police or government. There is no need for government, if you research throughout history its government that kills people, and all governments have become too corrupted over time and have been abolished, government is not the answer.

Good! The fewer hired killers we have roaming our streets looking for victims, the fewer men will be shot on sight. The pig budgets should just be eliminated. We taxpayers don't need to be robbed to pay for hired killers to murder random taxpayers.

Would'nt have to cut budgets if tax base was high enough to pay for needed jobs and supplys. Can't create more tax base without creating more jobs... that exactly what Obama is trying to do...

We need more police and less city hall and thats where you make the cuts. Also cut all free service to anyone who is not in the USA legally and and their so called anchor babys before we end up like AZ,TX and CA..
