FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - A vigil is planned Tuesday night in downtown Seattle to protest the recent officer-involved shootings at the corner of Boren and Howell, the site of a police shooting last week that killed John T. Williams.

In the past two weeks, seven people have been killed by police in Washington state. Some have been shot, some tased, and all in different jurisdictions.

So the Coalition to Stop Police Brutality organized this vigil. They want answers and they're not alone.

For the first time, we are hearing from the mother of David Young, shot and killed a week ago by Federal Way Police. In the small kitchen inside her modest Puyallup home, Marie Young agonizes over the loss of her only child.

"Everytime he ever talked to me, everytime he left this house, everytime he'd see me, 'I love you, mom, I love you, mom," she recalled.

The kitchen is where Marie Young should be canning food for the winter with her 23-year-old son David, but her life has been interrupted and now she is planning her son's funeral.

"I don't know everything yet on anything. I'm doing my best to try to find out the truth," says Young.

One week ago David got into trouble. Police were chasing him in a stolen pickup. Despite efforts to stop the truck, he kept going until he crashed into a fence in Federal Way. At some point police opened fire and killed him.

What exactly happened and why they shot him remains unclear and under investigation.

Hours later, Marie got the call every mother dreads.

"I let out a scream so loud you could probably have heard it in downtown Seattle," she said.

Marie admits David didn't live a perfect life, but she too wants answers about how it ended.

"To be violent, to try to do anything to harm another person in any way, shape or form, it was not in his nature whatsoever," said Young.

Cell phone video shows the scene as it unfolded. Police say he tried to run them down. But Tammy Shenefelt, the woman behind the camera, didn't see that.

"At the time they fired there was no way they could've been in danger unless that guy had a weapon," she said.

It was later determined David Young was not armed.

Tonight Marie Young finds herself in a club she never wanted to join.

"It's such a tragedy what's going on. I really don't understand it, I really don't," she said.

You can donate to the David Young Memorial Fund at any US Bank.

I do not respect what some of you are saying. I knew David Young && he was NOT a bad person. So he messed up a few times, no one is PERFECT! That doesnt give anyone the right to say such harsh things about him! He was a very loving kid && cared a lot about other people other than himself! He was not selfish at all. I dont believe one bit that he stole this vehicle or tried running from the police. It was just their excuse to shoot someone.

Not obeying police and using a deadly weapon,-car, gun, knife, it doesn't matter, you're going to get killed. Hopefully this message is getting out to all the thug morons out there, although I doubt it. Its kinda like standing on railroad tracks!

Once the grieving is over she'll realize her son acted like a dumb@$$ and got himself killed. Had her dirtbag son thought of the consequences of his actions his mother would be able to visit him in jail. But he obviously didn't care about anyone but himself. He just didn't want to go to jail. Next time you think of committing a crime think about who else it will affect. Mom should do the right thing and reach out to other thugs who prey on society and talk about the consequences of their actions. I feel terrible for mom's situation, but good riddance to her son.

I am amazed that King 5 would run a story like this and even put information about donating to a memorial fund for a man who attempted to kill a Police Officer? You have stooped to an all time low with this story and your editor should be ashamed of themselves. Criminal behavior cannot be excused because his mother says he was such a nice and loving boy. Guess what everyone has a mother and no matter how evil that person was they will be missed after they are gone. This story is a prime example of how skewed and distorted the media presents information.

He did what he had to do so that he could earn the right to go home to his loved ones. When your "loving son" continued to refuse to stop and had to be forced to stop fleeing the Officer did what he had to do and prevented him from escaping and endagering more lives. When your "loving son" attempted to run over the Officer with a stolen F250 and kill him the Officer did what needed to be done. I guarantee he didnt like it and if he could have had any alternative he would have made that choice. He made the difficult decision to end the threat to himself and the citizens he is sworn to protect and go home to see his loved ones. I for one am glad that Officer made the tough decision and made our community a much safer place. I understand your pain and grief but I am glad I am not going another Police Officer's Funeral because of the choices your son chose to make. Everyone has to make choices and realize the choices they make don't only effect them.

I really feel for the mother. I have a 23 year old son who tends to get himself in some not so good situations. I would be devistated if this happened to my son even if he was in the wrong. I don't understand why the boy was shot instead of arrested if he was stopped and had no signs of a weapon? It's bad all the way around.

@bobknows, so when the thief takes your car, you won't call the police correct? If you are so against the police then you should never use or depend on them to help you. I hope you donate to this thugs funeral as it is only people like you that would, I take it you support car theft! King 5, I can't beleive you would put the donation line in this news report, seriously I know it is a human life but he stole from someone, you should put donations can be made to the person that had their truck stolen and destroyed, I might give money for that.

Where is the coalition to stop criminals at?? I say good job officers, get the scum off the streets, I work hard for the thinks I have and low lives just think they can come and take my car or TV, stereo, computer when ever and then our justice system slaps them on the wrist and lets them back out so they can do it all over again. We all pay for this with higher insurance premiums, so good work in saving the citizens of the state money for the trial expenses, jail costs but also in getting one less thug out there from stealing your or my car.

If the blue gun thugs had gone back to their pig sty and stayed there Mr. Williams would be alive and well today. ... They have become terrorist gangs roaming our streets murdering the people. They lie about "protecting" people but what they do is aggravated murder. Justice will only be done when the murderous swine are tried and hanged.

I feel this really could have been avoided. Why didn't the police arrest him when they observed him getting into this "stolen" vehicle, which is now turned out to be their justification for shooting him? Before it even got onto pubic roads? If he was trying to allude I'm pretty sure that the "chase" would have been faster the 25 miles per hour? I know he didn't steal the truck, he bought it off of Craigs List 2 weeks prior with a bill of sale?!I know he wasn't dumb enough to steal a truck then drive it around, come on! He had no idea why the police were chasing him down and ramming him until they made him crash disabeling the truck per their own statement. If anyone watches the video its obvious that the truck never moved.Within minutes of the police "disabeling the truck" he was dead!! Gunshot straight through his head (6-10 shots fired). WOW! He was a good person! And I'm sure he was scared to death. Thanks FWPD!

I have an autistic son as well and I don't share your feelings at all. The only fear I have of the police is if my speedometer is tipping the limit.

..I don't know whats going on, but I do know my friends in other countries ( japan, germany, wales and england ) are all appalled. I don't want to go shopping because I REALLY don't feel safe now...worst of all is the thought that maybe I know one of these officers..maybe someone I know abit and trusted is a murderer...I also feel like I can't teach my autistic son that the police are ok to go to if he gets lost...I don't like any of this

The police have to take a defensive stand. They MUST defend themselves. If we have a police force that can not or will not defend themselves against threat from: vehicle, weapon, or person- than we do not have a "force" at all. We instead have a group representing the weakness of the society at large. We will not have a "force" to PROTECT and SERVE. The message will be sent that if you have the "might" you can do whatever to whomever you want. My children are young but I tell them all the time. If you are ever in the situation where a police officer is giving you instruction - Do it! and follow their instruction exactly. They can not read your mind and do not know what you are planning on doing. You must allow them control of the environment. Otherwise they have not only the right but the responsibility to stand their ground and protect themselves from danger real or imagined.

Stealing a car or trying to elude will never justify murder in my book.If the cops got out of the way while shooting the tires then the chase is over without injury or death. If they can easily shoot and kill an individual sitting in a car, then they can easily shoot out some tires.Lazy bums.

On a serious note: maybe his shooting was justified; maybe not. But I do not donate anything to memorials for people who steal cars.

"Police were chasing him in a stolen pickup." Why were the police chasing him in a stolen truck? Are budget cuts so severe that they cannot afford cruisers?

RUSTY REBEL! It's comments like yours that create the kids who begin to distrust the police. If you keep spewing your garbage maybe someday your child will run from the police and get shot! Sure, I'm just a white, 40-year-old male with a good job and modest income living in a Seattle suburb. But I do not believe the police are just looking to kill 20-year-olds for fun! Maybe you should think about what our world would be like without the police!

People, he was driving in a stolen vehicle, did not stop when the cops tried to pull him over, alluded several maneuvers to try to stop him in a safe manner and then tried to run over the cop that was approaching his vehicle once he finally did stop. Let's take a look at that. Hmm, we'd still have a person who was alive right now if he had just done what he was supposed to do and pulled over. I'm sure he was a very nice person, most people who steal other people's cars and try to run over other human beings in the line of duty are....aren't they?? Sorry but that wasn't just a little mistake with little consequences that was a HUGE mistake and unfortunately cost him his life.

David may or may not have done something wrong and his reaction to flee may have been wrong - probably out of panic but If the video is accurate as to him NOT trying to run over the police, then the police action to shoot was not justified. Personally, I think the police across the country have taken a 'defense first' attitude and shoot or taze at the drop of a hat. It really has become a police-state. I wish this country would go the route of England or Japan with their rigid gun-control, gun-ownership policies. I will never support the police nor believe anything they say. A bunch of neo-Nazi rednecks if you ask me.

It must have been the police that forced him to steal the truck? It must have been the police that forced him to run? It must have been the police that forced him to try and run them down? Those police officers are really an issue, lets get rid of them all, no more cops forcing mothers sons and daughters to commit crimes. Most of you people are idiots and shouldn't be allowed to talk to anyone. You shouldn't be allowed to breed you just dilute the gene pool.

My dad, who is a retired cop (27 and 1/2 years he says proudly), has a copy of the Norman Rockwell painting of the state cop sitting on a stool next to the child runaway kid with his belonging tied to a stick (google it, it's sweet). The troop is leaning in to the kid in an obvious effort to HELP. This is what the job is supposed to be. We have created a culture now where the police applicants view themselves as Navy SEALS fighting an omnipresent enemy (Us). That produces police abuse of authority and a resultant distrust of authority. How did we get here? More importantly, how do police restore the public's trust?

Glad he did'nt have the chance to kill my kids while he was racing around in a stolen car. Hope you read this mom. There were signs, you may have been able to prevent this. Not a perfect life...... DAH! You want answers? He stole a car, ran from police, got killed... luckily no one else did and now you have a funeral to go to. Glad no one else is going to a funeral he created!

I am so sorry for your loss. My 20 yr. old son always says "I love you" whenever he leaves home. I always answer that I love him too - because when he leaves out that door I know there are police out there who shoot to kill 20yr. olds. To me he is still my kid, I know he's not ready for the huge disappointments he will experience now that he is an "adult". He still believes that a policeman is good, that the law is just, and that his vote counts. And that is how young people should be - in the past. Now, it is a dangerous way to live. We all live in dangerous times - and the danger is not from where you used to expect it.
