BROOKLYN, NY – A father and son have climbed to the edge of space – or at least their homemade spacecraft did. And they have the video to prove it.

Yahoo! News reports Max Geissbuhler, 7, and his father loaded the weather balloon with a video camera, an iPhone and GPS equipment. It was all placed in specially insulated casing along with some hand warmers.

After eight months of preparation, they launched their craft from a Brooklyn park in August. It took a little over an hour for the craft to float about 100,000 feet into the sky before the balloon popped. The craft floated back to earth via parachute.

Max and his dad found it 25 miles away, stuck in a tree. The video camera inside recorded some impressive images of the curvature of the earth and the blackness of space.

Below is the video of the amazing adventure.

What a great father and son project. Reminded me of my younger days, when my dad would do those kind of things with my brothers. We need more dads like this one for sure. Thank you for letting us be a part of your experiment.

What a great project to share with your kids. What a way to build their imaginations and teach them science can be fun. Can you imagine their first day of school report for "What I did on my summer vacation?".

Is this legal? Can anyone send up a high altitude balloon anywhere, or do you need some kind of permit? I think it would be really fun to do this! Great science for youth, without much cost! Hey Apple, is there an app for this?
