SEATTLE - An 80-year-old woman was beaten in the doorway of her South Seattle home Friday morning by an intruder.

It happened at around 10 a.m. in the 7200 block of South Ryan Street.

Police say the suspect knocked on the door. When the woman answered, he pounced and began punching her.

A neighbor who was in her garden heard the victim screaming. She found the suspect on top of the woman.

"My wife had to intercede," said Al Ausman, the neighbor's husband.

Police say the suspect punched Ausman's wife in the face. Ausman wrestled with the suspect, likely 50 years his junior. The suspect got away, but not before Al could rip his coat off – a smart move that gives police valuable DNA evidence.

"We did what any citizen would do to protect friends and if you could leave it at that, gentlemen, I'd appreciate it," said Ausman.

Sexual assault investigators responded to the scene but police are not confirming a sexual assault took place.

The victim's husband died of cancer about five years ago. Since then, neighbors have been careful to check in on her every day. Police say it's a good thing they did.

"We're very lucky that the neighbor decided to intervene or the situation might have been much worse," said Seattle Police Department spokesman Mark Jamieson.

Neighbors say they'll be keeping an especially close eye on her from now on.

"I do worry about her because I know she'll be terrified to be here alone," said Viola Oberholtzer.

The 80-year-old's injuries are not considered life-threatening.

A police dog tracked the attacker for a few blocks, but then lost the scent. He is described as black, 18-years-old, 5-feet, 10-inches tall. He was wearing dark clothing, a Yankees baseball cap with dark hair sticking out the back and was carrying a backpack.

Anyone who saw anything suspicious in that neighborhood is asked to call Seattle police.

@underserf: Just wait. Soon, your new neighbors will be thugs and gangstas. And illegal squatters.

@jkd_kickboxer - near Rainier, sure, but those side streets have awesome, beautiful homes their owners are proud of and the area in general is safer than that bastion of Reichwing zealots, Burien. We DO call when we see "anything suspicious" but the cops got to prioritize, we got what we paid for.

The police scanner made it sound like she knew the guy, some kinda DV thing. At any rate, best of luck to all the murderers out there who salivate over the thought of killing someone and getting away with it. It's not as much fun as it sounds.

It happened near Rainier Ave S. End of the story. I'd rather be in Tacoma Hilltop than the mudurfugging place.

You never, Ever open the door to a stranger. If it's something important, they will leave a note when no one answers the door, and you may contact them later. You sit and wait for them to stop knocking, and leave. If instead of leaving they break in the door, THEN you blow them away. Blam-o.

Gun doesn't work in the situation like that. HEY, GRAND MA, IT'S TIME FOR YOU GET FIT! AND TOUGH! IT'S TIME FOR 'REX KWON DO! At Rex Kwan Do, we use the buddy system. No more flying solo. You need somebody watching your back at all times. Second off, you're gonna learn to discipline your image. You think I got where I am today because I dressed like Peter Pan over here? Take a look at what I'm wearing, people. You think anybody wants a roundhouse kick to the face while I'm wearing these bad boys? Forget about it. Last off, my students will learn about self respect. You think anybody thinks I'm a failure because I go home to Starla at night? Forget about it!

kidrick, while I will agree about not being a target, and being aware of your surroundings, you may want to look again at you "National Statistics." The study you refer to not only includes homicides, but also suicides, and accidental deaths. Firearms are used over 2.5 million times a year in self defense. This means that each year, firearms are used more than 80 times more often to protect the lives of honest citizens than to take lives. (Kleck, The National Safety Council, CDC, and FBI stats)

I don't really think a gun would have helped her. She was pounced at the door, how could she have gotten a gun that was hidden somewhere in her home? And even if she had been carrying it on herself, I really doubt she would have been able to get it out and shoot the guy. Even if she would have gotten it out, I'm pretty sure the intruder would have easily taken it out of her hands and then threatened HER with the gun, making the situation worse. And to all you other folks who are so prepared with your guns, do you think the intruder will just let you walk to wherever you are holding your gun? Do you think you can pull out your gun in the split second it takes for him to take you down? In this situation, by the time you realize this guy is a burglar and you are heading for your gun (even on yourself), he's already taken you down. Nobody is ready for an intruder like that.

@Ballistic, if you're that confident, why don't you post your address right now? And an easy driving direction for Jr. High drop-out thugs who have never used a computer before.

Ok all you killa's out there, Normally burglars pick homes that have obvious signs of emptiness and wealth, burglars are sneak thieves, the danger for you and all home owners is this, (If I broke into your home while you were out and you surprised me after I had just found your beautiful guns, I am forced and obligated to either threaten or use that weapon that you so generously provided for me, in most cases the National Statistics say that handguns are used against the home owners many more times than burglars are shot with them, so wisely speaking anything in your home becomes a weapon against you if you surprise a burglar, my advice for people is lock your guns in your trunk when you go out or other safe place, carry a single self-defense weapon ready for a moment’s notice when returning to your home at night, if I am suspicious call the police, do not enter a dark residence if something seems wrong depend on your senses and feel the situation before hand. Don’t be a Target.

Intruders, criminals, cons, thugs, bad guys, punks, hoodlums, mobsters, or the insane; my door is unlocked all night long. If you want to test your luck, go right ahead. This is just another reason I keep multiple guns loaded in my home. I am always looking to save the tax payers money on these scum, no police, no court, no lawyer, no prison. Just a simple bullet to the head, only cost about 60 cents.

Police cannot protect any individual 24/7. I have a .357mag, .44mag , .38, and last and best, a legal short barrel 12 gauge pump shotgun, loaded with double ot buck shot. I have had occaision to confront prowlers, and so far all it has taken, is the SOUND of me jacking the slide mechanism on my 12 gauge to end the problem quickly.

If you don't know about firearms, then shut the heII up. The Dirty Harry's handgun won't be perfect for an elderly woman. I recommend James Bond's handgun though. It's small, light, and pretty accurate for elderly people to use. It's called 'Walther PPK'

When you dummies find a "327" let me know, Its actually a 357 magnum, indicating that the projectile is .357" in diameter. And stats show that at close range, a 22 cal bullet does more damage than the large bores, not enough power to go in and then exit cleanly, so it just goes in and bounces around alot, tearing up all the organs it hits...How ever, in this case, any caliber will do nicely

In the state of WA, there're more laws that protect the intruder than elderly home owners! F**k the law, and arm yourselves!

If you're elderly, it's best to move into a highrise condo, if not retirement home. Why? Usually, a highrise condo has its own security guards, security cameras, secure entrances, secure parking garage, etc. etc. And, above all, the friendly and helpful neighbors. Wuhehehehehehehehe.

I am not sure a nice litte .327 would do any good... When you are under attack you lose acute motor function, and it doesn't help being old, shaking hands to boot. A nice little 12 gauge on the other hand...

Someone should have taught Grandma to shoot. I nice litte .327 Federal Magnum revolver would have ensured an different outcome. Criminals love to victimize the old and frail. They tend to be compliant and easy to assault. Obviously SPD couldn't protect her. When seconds count the cops are only minutes away! Her loved-ones should have made sure she could defend herself. Hollow-points, when you care enough to send the very best.
