The typhoon that slammed into the Philippines on Friday is shaping up as one of the deadliest natural disasters on record there. It will be days before the full extent of damage is assessed, but officials say as many as 10,000 people are believed dead in one city alone.

NORTHWEST RESPONSE

Relief organizations are mobilizing to help. You can donate through the following organizations:

EMPACT Northwest
Tacoma-based EMPACT Northwest has sent a joint medical/rescue assessment team and will also collaborate with Fuel Relief.org to supply desperately needed fuel to the hardest hit regions.

Mercy Corps
Mercy Corps will be working with partners on the ground to meet the urgent humanitarian needs, as well as looking at what will be needed for long-term recovery.

World Concern
Donations will help distribute food, water, emergency shelter and relief supplies.

World Vision
Federal Way-based World Vision is working to meet the most urgent needs of food, clean water, and emergency shelter for 400,000 people.

Child United
Lynnwood-based Child United is collecting relief items and will have drop-off locations across Western Washington

American Red Cross

Emergency responders and volunteers are providing meals and relief items, and will also send telecommunication specialists and a satellite system.

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army says 100 percent of all disaster donations will be used for relief efforts and to immediately meet the specific needs of disaster survivors. Text TYPHOON to 80888 to Donate $10 or give online.
