BREMERTON, Wash. - A Bremerton daycare director has resigned after she allegedly gave a baby the wrong breast milk, then tried to hide the mistake.

The state's Department of Early Learning is investigating the Sylvan Way Christian Daycare center, after a baby was given the wrong breast milk on February 16.

"This little baby is my life," says Ashley Love, the baby's mother. "He's everything to me and for someone not to tell me what's going on with him, it makes me very upset."

Ashley and Jesse Love dropped their baby boy Julien off at daycare, along with containers filled with breast milk so he could get the best nutrition, even while he was away from mom.

"We were doing all the right steps, our bottles were labeled," says Jesse Love.

Pastor Eric Glomstad says the director was in the infants' room when she made the mistake.

"She reached into the refrigerator and pulled out the wrong bottle. It was labeled but she didn't understand the label and gave the breast milk to the infant," he said.

Ashley Love says she picked her child up from daycare and no one said a word. Then she got a strange phone call from a teacher the next day.

"She said, 'Ashley, I have something to tell you that happened yesterday at the daycare, and I'm not supposed to tell you this,'" says Ashley. "She said we fed Julien another woman's breast milk yesterday."

While breast milk has its benefits, doctors say it can pose certain dangers. Diseases such as HIV and hepatitis B and C can be passed through it.

"I was frustrated and angry and disgusted. It's not her breast milk," says Jesse Love.

The Loves feel like their trust has been violated, and will no longer be bringing their baby there. The daycare's director has since resigned.

Pastor Glomstad says he understands their anger, and that trust is also important to Sylvan as well.

"When you say you're a Christian daycare and you have a cover-up, that speaks of dishonesty and a lack of integrity," he said.

"The Department of Early Learning says the daycare has a good record, but wants to make sure the series of mistakes doesn't happen again. It may mean more frequent monitoring of the facility.

The has got to be the second cutest baby I've ever seen (number 1 being my niece). I don't understand why this is in the news though, don't mistakes like that happen often?

If she couldn't "understand" the label, what was she doing there in the first place? Can't she read labels, or understand what she's reading. I'd be pulling my kid too - as they say, there's a lot that can pass through a mother's milk, and not all of it good. I wouldn't want to put my kid in that danger.

So why doesn't the article say why she "didn't understand the label?" How can that be? Where is the story within the story?

when my daughter was born 2 months premature , over 30 years ago , she was fed thru a tube . could not suck until she was 6 months old . i am an avid breastfeeder of 6 kids . seattle hospital [ where i stayed by her ] had me hooked each day to a wonderful breast pump , i faithfully pumped and fed the whole premie unit . i felt like a cow sometimes! but i got nothing but thanks for the nutruients i gave these frail new babes . i also worked in a infant daycare for years . stop complaining about your childcare. if it is good you are sooo lucky . if it is not good take your baby home ASAP .

I hope the baby didn't drink a drug addict's breast milk or HIV positive breast milk. Sue the day care for million dollars!

I worked at a daycare when I was younger and saw a teacher, a teacher that was the "top teacher" at the daycare abuse a boy. She'd hit him, make him stand outside in the freezing weather, pinch him and she had him in her arms while she was standing up and dropped him to the mat below. I was freshly hired in that class and I went to the director and told them I saw her abusing him and they did NOTHING. So I called the parents myself, got the Grandpa and told them of the abuse. I lost my job but who can tolerate that? After working in a few more daycares, I told myself I will never leave my kid in one. You are trusting strangers to care for your kids, but you don't know if they are mentally sound or not or abusive or not. That would have been a story. A kid accidentally getting another's breastmilk being treated like it's breaking news? That's a joke. It should have been cause to change policy maybe in that center to make sure it never happened again, but this is really silly.

krystyn - AGREED! I worked in a day care and saw some ATROCIOUS things that were happening to these poor kids. You may want to think that your instructions are what is going on with your kid, but trust me, it's not. The daycare providers care about one thing - $$$$$. If that means feeding your kids dollar menu items instead of a nutritious lunch - they will do it. Do what I did - have a stay at home parent.

Someone hire this woman right away. This was a mistake, yes, but probably the most harmless mistake you could make at a daycare. Most mothers can breastfeed but don't give it enough of a chance. My wife donates milk to a mother who belongs to the tiny minority that cannot, and everyone's happy . Finally, you don't have to be screened for disease to breastfeed your own kid, that's ridiculous.

Do we have nothing better to do than air this garbage?? So what, wet nursing has been going on since the beginning of babies. The lady needs to get her job back, and the parents need to stop being so paranoid. Some other baby may have recieved her breast milk.. As for the husband thinking it was discusting, I wonder why? He has had his share of breast milk I am sure..hehehe..

Deanniedorko, You saw your daughter is alive today because of donated breast milk.... So you knew she was getting donated breast milk (that was by the way TESTED for disease, and you CONSENTED to her get it.. Mr and Mrs. Love never consented to having their son fed another mother's milk, nor was that bottle tested. Amy Croan, if it WASN'T WRONG why did the director, DIRECT her staff no to tell anyone what happen??? Jitterbug it was an honest mistake yes.. THE DIRECTOR DIRECTED HER STAFF TO NO SAY ANYTHING that's the issue. DBOO, If there is no way the milk could have passed any disease, then why did the doctor allow the testing?? Are you a doctor?? Doesn't sound like it.

There was no "cover up" It was not told to her because 1) it was no big deal and 2) they know what a fruitcake the mother is and knew she would blow it out of proportion (which obviously happened) My question is what inside contact she had at KING to make this a lead news story (or even any news story) unless she was a plant by KING so KING could defame Christianity and Christians.

Here is a tip for the mom- If your baby is your "life" and you don't like the way others care for him then you stay home and take care of him. If your baby is really your life you will find a way to not leave him with strangers every day. It takes sacrafices but it sure is worth it to know what is going on with my children every day. I have worked in daycares before I had children and I watched providers dump breast milk down the sink and give formula because it would help the child nap longer. Once you have seen the things that go on at day cares, even the good ones, you would not ever leave your own child there. This is not news. It goes on every day.

krispeter123 There ARE milk banks - local / national - that accept human milk to give to babies in need. I am surprised your dr. never informed you of this (if you had mentioned it) --- as for the stay at home father not mixing up the milk because only one baby's milk is in the fridge - it does happen - make sure you tell the father the milk in the bottle and not in the milk carton.

If the other woman was breast feeding, she was likely screened for disease and the doctor said she was healthy ---- the young narcissist mother may have thought it was "disgusting" but I'm sure her child had no problem. There are milk banks for humans - does she think that is disgusting too??? The young narcissist opportunists were looking for a reason to sue someone. They are definitely not Christians and maybe were trying to set up the Christian daycare to be sued or at least defamed. They are an example of what is now wrong with the united states - narcissism and not caring about anyone else except 'self'

When I was a kid if this had happened it would be 'mistakes happen' and nobody would have said any more about it. Now it's a lead news story, a person thinking she had to resign for making a little mistake, and likely a multi million dollar lawsuit by the young narcissist idiots (likely unmarried) that think their child is too good to be exposed to anything except what THEY deem "safe" . Times have changed - and not for the better. BTW - if you overprotect your children, it leads to future health problems (such as asthma and allergies --- other problems)

I'm sure the baby never knew the difference. It's too bad the daycare worker felt like they needed to cover it up . The cover up is the real scandle here. The parent only needed an up front apology. No real harm done other than a loss of trust.

OMG, get over it lady... the baby at least got breast milk! How many preemies in hospitals get breast milk from dozens of donors? The odds of the milk having any of the HIV, Hep B or C, is so highly unlikely. The mother would probably NOT be breastfeeding if she knew she had any of those. As the Love Mother could be a carrier as well, for the baby who got HER milk most likely. Where is the OTHER mother's opinion?

If I was the director of the day care. I would fire the person that told. She just opened your service for a lawsuit.I think that is the main reason the childs parents went to the media.Shouldnt the daycare know if the child or parent is HIV positive? The child is at a higher risk just being in a daycare with other children, then anything he drank.

dede1978 - Sorry. Here let me make a more educated response. When I made my comment I should have directed it to the posters blasting the news and the child's mother. I am aware of the common place of donating breast milk and wet nurses etc. The fact is in the story. The posters for some reason don't comment on the fact that the daycare didn't tell her in person. Instead she got a phone call. If it was my child I would be upset as well. As for the director resigning maybe a leave of action should have been better. Look at the bigger picture of todays world. Who's to say that the mother of the other child's breast milk did have something the doctors didn't catch. You just have to be more carefull, look read, and ask questions. So maybe the posters should examine the story a little closer. It seems everytime the news puts this stuff on e the web every goes crazy. You don't like the news don't read it or don't watch it. It is what it is.

Shame on you as well as the parents of this child for blowing this way out of proportion. Yes, the daycare should have notified them of the mistake immediately, but other than that, this really isn't an issue. Women donate and wet nurse babies all the time.

I have a 5 month old infant and have a friend that has her baby a day ahead of me and whenever possible we leave our babies with each other because we know that the other has the "proper equipment" to feed and soothe the baby. I do understand that someone could be scared about diseaes but to say that another woman's breastmilk is disgusting is taking it a little too far! I am one of those woman who could feed more than just my baby (I have a large suppply) and if there was some way I cold donate my breastmilk locally I would do it!! What a wonderful and nutriional gift us woman are blessed with being able to give.

N, sweetheart, you were not doing all the right steps. The right steps would involve staying home with the kid where you belong. If you can't afford to stay home with the kid, don't have it until you can. Problem averted. No, it is not a slam at women. If dad wants to stay home, there will still not be a mix up, as there will only be one kid's milk in the fridge.

This is a King 5 story? Wow, very slow news day huh!!!? Anyway, this is absolutely ridiculous. Those parents should have immediately forgiven the person. I'm sure the person was just really embar. by the mix up. I mean, if these parents are CHRISTIANS then they forgive and not ridicule. One can see a mistake versus anything "evil" here. Why would the director quit over this? I make mistakes at work too. Daycare workers do the job of a parent and we all know parents make mistakes too! Daycare workers get paid minimum wage - maybe just a tad bit more and usually without healthcare benefits. These parents need to walk the line of shame and quit call themselves CHRISTIANS!

I think the behavior of all adults involved here is immature and I cannot understand why the director resigned - what, she has no room to be human? The mother's reaction (my baby is my life!) is drama. Yet what bothers me the most is the sloppy reporting on the part of King 5. HCV is not transmitted via breast milk, it is a blood borne disease. Geez, do a 5 second Internet search. Unbelievable!

I agree with others, this was blown way out of proportion. It'd be a simple matter of asking the woman who's breast milk it was, Are you sick? Like deannie said, breast milk is often shared and donated for other babies' use when mothers can't make their own. (Props to women who donate btw.) Little Julien hasn't suffered at all, I'm sure.

They screen all pregnant women for diseases during the pergnancy. It actually offended me when the mother said other women's milk was disgusting. All her baby got was an extra dose of anibodies that she didn't carry in her milk.

I am outraged that 1) King 5 is fueling an outcry to the behavior in this story; and 2) that the director felt she had to resign. Wet nursing has been commonplace from ancient times into the 20th century. Wasn't Selma Hayek praised last year for breastfeeding a sick infant in Sierra Leone? Thank goodness for milk banks today who save so many babies' lives. I'm sure the risk of transmitting the HIV virus in this case is extremely remote as most people are tested for HIV in the beginning of their pregnancy. The composition of breastmilk hardly varies from woman to woman. I just wish the director hadn't felt like she did something so morally wrong that she felt she should try to keep it a secret. -Amy Croan, MPH

I can't believe this was KING 5's lead story!! It's just breastmilk for pete's sake! Bad form to cover up a mistake no doubt and discipline was needed for that, but it was just a mistake. I notice that KING 5 did not QUOTE that doctor that warns of those horrible diseases that can be passed through breastmilk. Pure histrionics for no reason. Jesse Love stating he was, "disgusted" because his baby got one bottleful of another mom's breastmilk....pullleeese! My 12-year-old daughter is alive today because of donated breastmilk after her premature birth. What an embarrassment for KING 5 to cover.
