Craigslist removes adult services section

Craigslist closed the adult services section of its website Saturday, replacing it with a black bar that says "censored," just over a week after a group of state attorneys general said there weren't enough protections against blocking potentially illegal ads promoting prostitution.

The listings came under new scrutiny after the jailhouse suicide last month of a former medical student who was awaiting trial in the killing of a masseuse he met through Craigslist. Critics have likened the services to virtual pimping, while Craigslist maintained the site was carrying ads even tamer than those published by some newspapers.

Like many other free online forums, Craigslist typically does not review ads before they are posted by users. But in 2008, under pressure from 40 state attorneys general, Craigslist began requiring posters to provide a working phone number and pay a fee for placing an ad in what is now the adult services section. Several months later, Craigslist adopted a manual screening process in which postings are reviewed before publishing.

State officials believe Craigslist is still not doing enough to stop illegal ads from appearing.

The company said Saturday it would issue a statement on the matter, though it didn't say when.

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, one of the 17 attorneys general who pressed for the change, said in a statement that he welcomed the change and was trying to verify Craigslist's official policy going forward.

In an Aug. 24 letter, the state attorneys general said Craigslist should remove the section because it couldn't adequately block potentially illegal ads promoting prostitution and child trafficking.

Authorities point to the case of 24-year-old Philip Markoff as a prime example of the dangers posed by Craigslist services. The former medical student was accused of killing a masseuse he met through the hugely popular classified advertising site, which was founded by Craig Newmark. Markoff committed suicide in the Boston jail where he was awaiting trial.

Attorneys general from Arkansas, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia made the request a week after Markoff committed suicide.

Craigslist's adult services section carried ads for everything from personal massages to a night's companionship, which critics say veered into prostitution.

Craigslist's CEO Jim Buckmaster said in a May blog posting that the company's ads were no worse than those published by the alternative newspaper chain Village Voice Media. He cited one explicit ad which included the phrase: "anything goes $90."

The government does not have the privilege to prohibit prostitution in the first place. Somewhere along the line, folks got complacent and just ignored it when legislators passed unconstitutional legislation. The executive branches had no problem enforcing that unconstitutional legislation, and the judicial branches continue to uphold that unconstitutional legislation. And everyone sits around wondering what is wrong with our society, while all 3 branches laugh at the People electing them. It was obvious to our forefathers that democracy was nothing more than tyranny by many, which is why We do not live in a democracy. And it was obvious to them that eventually, Americans would stop being educated of what their individual, inherent rights were, and be tricked into believing they lived in a democracy, where it was ok to infringe on the individual, inherent rights of others, as long as enough folks supported it. This is the sole reason We have a 2nd amendment.

@cjcampbell, murder for hire is a heck of a lot different than prostitution. The ones who are being used as sex slaves is wrong and any action involving children is wrong, but if some woman or man wants to sell their body for sex, that is their choice and is not your business at all. The only time it should be illegal is when they are forced to do so and as many choose to sell themselves, it is none of your business if they do.

Censored is the right word. This isn't a question of supporting or not supporting prostitution. It's a question of supporting or not supporting yet more government intervention in our lives. We don't need a nanny government to push its version of morality on us. The DA wants to paint this as safety issue, but it's not really - it's a morality issue. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness applies to Christians.

The apologists for prostitution will continue to claim that it is a victimless crime even as women and children are forced into it against their will, exploited and enslaved by greedy and evil men and women, and killed and injured while practicing their "profession." Prohibiting ads for prostitution is no more immoral or wrong than prohibiting ads for murder for hire.

After court decision(s) to the contrary, Attorney Generals from several states wished to impose, and are now doing so, their personal perception of what Craigslist readers may, or may not read...or post. It is censorship, pure..simple and overbearing. Tennessee's AG is amongst the group of state's Attorney Generals supporting this censorhip. Connecticut Attorney General Blumenthal said, "If it (Craigslist) was doing the right thing voluntarily in response to the AGs, it could set a good example for others." Notably, the article cites the group of Attorney Generals "demanded"...did not "request" the section be closed...Censored. Foremost, Craigslist has not "voluntarily" closed the section, but been coerced, and badgered into limiting what might be read. Craigslist does divulge information to law enforcement/attorney generals the names, addresses and phone numbers of individual posters. Many contend CL provides such without requiring court orderered documentation.

Not that Craigslist is wholly deserving of this support. from its posters, readers/viewers. CL is noted for rolling over and releasing names, addresses, phone numbers, etc., of "purported" offenders...those "thought" to be immoral by various law enforcement agencies, including state attorney generals. Craigslist (CL) posters assume anomynous posting, CL publishes anomynous adult ads with the intent of attracting viewership/readership. Yet, at the same time CL is less than stringent upon insisting that court orders/warrants identifying "anomynous" is presented. CL, for all it's pretense of providing "anonimity, is quite lax in notifying posters that such information has been requested and/or released to law enforcewment officals, CL is not noted for challenging the merit, authenticity or legality of revealing a posters identity. Shabby corporate responsibility being carried out at CL.

Safer to advertise on Craig's List, than to walk the streets. I think it's time for prostution to be made legal, anyway. As long as it's consenting ADULTS, what's the harm.

Sex will continue to happen even without Craig's List ads. So quit crying and go find it elsewhere. If it's worth having then maybe you all could work for it a little. Stop waiting for it to come to your door at the click of a button. Go get it the old fashioned way: earn it!! Develop a relationship with another human being for heaven's sake! If you ain't got the balls to invest in a real relationship then find what you want on your own without expecting others to provide it for you. If you just want sex for fun then there are plenty of places you can find it. Sort of a no brainer. So stop wasting your time leaving complaints and get on your phone!

So the AG's and all the moral do-gooders think they have won....not, This is one of those trades that has been going on for 1000's of years, and the adds on craigslist will only show up somewhere else...just not as visable...

... no reason for this to have ever been on Craig's List. It only serves to promote prostitution. Good business decision to remove it. Funny thing that Craig would allow adds for prostitution but prohibit ads for selling long guns and pistols. Maybe he is just a pervert..... :)

Yeah, this is a family morals conservative position to me... "Be your own man.. unless it's sex, atheist, abortion, immoral stuff on TV and media, gay, bad language, other than my religion.. then then we need Big Government for that to censor the 'filth'"

Most of those Ag's going after Craigslist have a D' after their names. But I have to ask, how is it anyones elses business what these people do? How does their activity effect YOUR lives? I personally think homosexuality is wrong, but I don't care if someone else is having homosexual sex. It does not have anything to do with my life. Neither do these Craigslist ads. It is censorship. Censorship effects EVERYONE.

Sadly for thousands of years, men and women alike have allowed themselves to be degraded, abused, and emotionally damaged as they participate in the immoral and disgusting "sex for hire" trade. It damages their souls. Conversely so much happiness and joy can come to individuals who are exclusively devoted to each other and remain faithful throughout their lives. Families are strengthened, children are brought up in a healthier environment, trust and friendship thrives. I was fortunate to know my great grand parents until I was in my mid twenties. They were married and devoted to each other for nearly 85 years. One passed away at 105 the other at 103. Their daughter, my grandmother was married 60 years before grandpa passed away in his late 70s. These men and women were faithful and true to each other all of their lives. It was obvious in the quiet devotion and kindnessess they expressed to each other. What an example they were to me. If only more would choose that path!

"The double standard of the left." --- The Ag isn't affiliated with any party, so this isn't a question of left vs right. In fact, you can take the firings of AGs across the country by the Bush administration to show that if anything, these guys are right leaning - considering that the position of the right is one of 'Christian morals', these guys are actually more conservative AGs, especially when you look at the states these guys are coming from. Southern states are traditionally conservative, and you've got six of them in there.

Who cares.. except.. maybe its time to legalize same as Nevada== WOW a new tax stream for the state budget.. maybe a new Agency that offers gals to hire or men to hire. Write Chris and tell her we need a new Adult Service agency, That makes house calls 24/7 when the wifes legs are crossed. Reasonable rates during this economy.

This is so stupid. I am so used to getting sex from there, it just doesn't make sense. I guess I will bring my business to Vancouver's Platinum Club and spend my money elsewhere. Good one, America!
