SEATTLE -- Western Washington was soaring past heat records Thursday, forcing people and animals to find ways to stay cool.

The previous record of 87 degrees at SeaTac Airport was broken before 1 p.m. It reached 95 degrees by 6 p.m.

One bank sign in Chehalis indicated 104 degrees, but that was more an indication of what it felt like than the actual temperature which was about 10 degrees cooler.

The predicted high for Seattle on Friday will be 90, but that will quickly drop into the upper-70s for the weekend.

Water was the word of the day across the region. The Union Gospel Mission worked to keep the homeless hydrated in Seattle's Pioneer Square. In SeaTac, firefighters battled an apartment fire in hot, heavy gear. They made sure to take regular water breaks and find some shade.

Pierce County has designated several dozen buildings as cooling centers this week to help protect people, including several dozen libraries and communities centers in the county. People are also encouraged to take advantage of movie theaters, malls and other stores that have air conditioning.

In King County, two cooling centers have opened. If you're seeking relief in Redmond, the air-conditioned Redmond Senior Center will be open to everyone Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. And the Federal Way Community Center, located at 876 S. 333rd Street, will be open to all citizens during the period of possible extreme hot weather.

While the public buildings are just for people, some pet stores, including the Petco in Puyallup, are inviting animals inside as well, where water dishes are ready.

"As long as your pet's on a leash or in some kind of, smaller animals, containment facility, they're always welcome in this store. And it's air conditioned and the floor's cool," said Caroline Jensen, general manager at Puyallup Petco.

It's also important to check on your elderly neighbors or people with underlying health problems. They are most at risk. And if you exercise outside, do it in the morning or evening.

It's just so funny to hear of how people are trying to deal with this "heat." Ha ha!!! There are many more places in the US that have "heat' like 90 to 100 degree temps for days and sometimes weeks to months. And we complain about how "hot" it is here. Yes, bring the "heat" on!!!

ghost762 said on July 8, 2010 at 12:15 AM I'm currently in Iraq and I would love to see 94 degrees during the day. Try 124 at noon.~~~~~~~~~~~~`` Yet another reason we have to not complain! You are over risking your life to protect our country and our freedoms that we take for granted...in 124 degree heat, nonetheless!...and we're complaining that it's a mere 94! If most of us realized how lucky we are that we even have the freedom to complain I think these forums would have a much different attitude! Thank you so much for your service and protection! We do apprecieate you and all of your fellow soldiers.

Dear Media: It's not called a heat wave, its simply called SUMMER! Stop dramatizing an otherwise benign natural event that occurs once a year in the Pacific Northwest.

Cut down more tree's @juliav, you idiot. That's why it's hot, stay in school. I remember it being much much much hotter in 1992, 1993, 1994, etc. But you probably weren't born yet huh.

My house has no whole-house A/C but as long as the air at night is cooler than the day, I can usually get the house cooled down enough to endure the next day. Last night, it got down to about 62F outside. We had EVERY window open, and fans in most of them, some blowing in, and some blowing out. At bedtime, the downstairs gets shut up tight but the 2nd floor windows stay open with fans, for cross-current airflow. My bedroom was too cold for comfortable sleeping (ie, I needed more blankets). But the house was 66-67F inside this morning when I woke up. Now all the windows are shut and all the curtains closed. Reflectix is in a few of the upstairs, east-facing windows. By nightfall, it will be 80F in the house, but that's still tolerable. For the nights when it does NOT cool down, we have a room with a single A/C unit that we run. It will cool one room; everybody piles into the room and sleeps however they can. Last year we ran it twice.
