SEATTLE - A convicted rapist released from McNeil Island Special Commitment Center under restrictions could be freed from state supervision as early as next week. The Seattle Times reports King County Superior Court Judge Paris Kallas signed a court order Friday freeing 57-year-old Joseph Aqui from state-imposed restrictions. However, he will have to register as a Level 3 sex offender. Aqui spent nearly 20 years in prison for a series of rapes, assaults and burglaries he committed in Walla Walla, Bellevue and Tacoma between 1970 and 1973. He was paroled in 1992 but was committed to the Special Commitment Center the following year. He was conditionally released from the center in 1997, though he was sent back for three months when he violated conditions of his release in 2001.
