SEATTLE - A convicted rapist released from McNeil Island Special Commitment Center under restrictions could be freed from state supervision as early as next week.

The Seattle Times reports King County Superior Court Judge Paris Kallas signed a court order Friday freeing 57-year-old Joseph Aqui from state-imposed restrictions.

However, he will have to register as a Level 3 sex offender.

Aqui spent nearly 20 years in prison for a series of rapes, assaults and burglaries he committed in Walla Walla, Bellevue and Tacoma between 1970 and 1973.

He was paroled in 1992 but was committed to the Special Commitment Center the following year. He was conditionally released from the center in 1997, though he was sent back for three months when he violated conditions of his release in 2001.

Assault with a friendly weapon? It's still assault. What happened to "three strikes and you are out"?

Since the article didn't state the rapists sexual preference ,I say release him in a apartment complex of his type who are all HIV positive.

There is no question....he will re-offend. This time though he is likely to kill his victims to try and avoid going back to the slam. Great job State of Washington! I look forward to the state getting sued into oblivion when the future victims families sue the state for negligence and wrongful death.

He's only 57, and was committing rapes in 1970, at age 17? He doesn't sound like someone who ever needs to be released...

Judge Paris Kallas signed the court order lets remember him when election time comes around. These judges that are soft on sexual offender should not be re elected again. Maybe someone should get the O'reiley factor after this judge. I bet if they came after him I bet Paris would Cr@p.

Obviously rehabilitation doesn't work for these type of people. Re-instate state/federal mandated lobotomies. Never have to worry that this repeate offender will touch another human in an unlawful way again. The upside: Cost savings. No need for special correctional facilities, no guards, just a person to wipe his mouth and direct him around a (campus) of his peers.

PERIOD! An offender cannot be rehabilitated and have no place in society.

When are there going to be laws to protect the innocent against people against perps like this one. He is a repeat offender and should not be released. But as long as his rights are protected the legal system doesn't seem to care when people get out and rapes again.
