Starting Monday you can get rid of your clunker appliances and get a rebate of up to $100.

The stimulus program aims to get people to trade in or permanently disable a less energy efficient appliance and upgrade.  The concept behind this use of stimulus money is to help retailers and manufacturers and make the nation more energy efficient in the process.

According to the Web site cashforapplianceswa.com, rebates will be paid to Washington residential consumers who purchase eligible refrigerators and clothes washers during the rebate period and recycle their resource-wasting appliance. The following appliances will be eligible for rebates:

ENERGY STAR Refrigerators (greater than 9 cubic feet) - $75 rebate
ENERGY STAR High-efficiency Clothes Washers (Modified Energy Factor (MEF) 2.46 or greater and Water Factor (WF) 4 or less) - $100 rebate."

But the rebate program comes with conditions in Washington State.  For example, you can't use it on a dryer, air conditioner or a garbage disposal. You also can't use the rebate for a new appliance in a new home.

In addition:

  • You must replace an existing appliance in a residence in Washington state.
  • There's a limit of one clothes washer and one refrigerator per household.
  • Rebates are for appliances purchased from a store in Washington state or where proof of payment of Washington sales tax is marked on the receipt.
  • For a refrigerator, proof must be provided that the replaced refrigerator was recycled, or at least decommissioned, in accordance with state disposal laws.

What if they came up with a Cash for Clunkers for items in the governors office? Can anybody come up with obsolete "items" that should be replaced? Think hard now... No wait. Don't think hard at all. Hah! Hah! Hah!

It is better to just fix what is old instead of tossing it away then buying new and having to fork out more money! Unless you really need this purchase I say skip it! It is what you can save on a daily basis than what you make. So if you skip a big purchase like this.. Look at what you just saved! NICE!

AFter the success of the cash for clunkers automobile program, this will definitely help get america's appliance companies moving again, along lowering our carbon footprint. I think there should definitely be more subsidies for low-income people to have a higher rebate, so they can tap into the programs even more.

Ok the front loaders dont use water like that old agitating tub agreed but we like our clothes to come clean after one cycle. Anyway if your on well water dont consider a front loader. I fixed laundry machines now that there's no remodel work... Repair it dont replace it!

Check your local utility. They might have an incentive program going. We just got $35 from Snohomish PUD for buying an Energy Star dishwasher.

Sure it is. Check the requirements, the lower priced appliances do not qualify. They either use to much power or water. Notice you have to show proof of paying the sales tax. It's not about the environment, it's about the money. The higher the requirement, the higher the cost, the higher the sales tax.

It is not necessary to spend $1500 to $2000 to buy a new refrigerator or washing machine. Heck, you can get a new washer and dryer for less that $1500!!

I am not sure spending $1500 to $2000 to get the $100 rebate is worth it. Plus all the hassle with receipts and so forth just to get it.
