SEATTLE -- A man has been arrested and charged with vehicular assault after driving his car into three pedestrians in downtown Seattle near Pike Place Market Thursday.

Seattle police say it happened at First Avenue and Stewart Street shortly before noon.

Witnesses say a man, confirmed by police as Travis Clinton Lipski, 39, driving a silver Subaru west on Stewart suddenly drove toward a couple on the sidewalk, clipping the woman and hitting her husband, throwing him over the hood of the car.

"He was still coming at a good speed as he was coming down this way and that's when he slammed into a truck," one witness told KING 5 News.

Witnesses told police the Subaru continued down the hill with the man still on the hood of the car. It hit a second woman, pinning her in between the car and a produce truck parked in front of the store Sur La Table.

"I saw this tremendous crash, and and I heard this lady hollering and screaming," said witness Emigdio Ramos, who saw the incident from an apartment window.

The crash caused the man to be thrown off the hood of the car and into the street.

"There was a lady, she must have been a nurse, she was working on him, and she must be using mouth to mouth," said Ramos.

Firefighters and other emergency responders had to rescue the pinned woman.

All three pedestrians were taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment. The man thrown over the vehicle, in his 50's, is in intensive care in serious condition. His wife, also in her 50's, is in satisfactory condition. The woman who was pinned against the truck, age 25, also remains hospitalized in satisfactory condition.

Officials evaluated Lipski for signs of being under the influence at the scene. He was arrested for two counts of vehicular assault and was booked into the King County Jail.

"I couldn't tell anything wrong with the gentleman's demeanor maybe he was in shock," a witness said.

"I've lived here over 40 years and I've never witnessed anything this traumatic for myself personally," said James Brown, witness.

Friend thinks cause was mechanical

"I'm very sorry for all the folks and for Travis and the whole situation is terrible. With that said, Travis is a very decent person he worked very hard," said Jeff Pearson, who has known Lipski for more than two years.

Pearson doesn't believe the cause of the accident was medical or drug-related. Pearson says, earlier this week, Lipski asked for help fixing the brakes on the car.

"He called me just two days ago to say his brakes were going bad on the vehicle and, now, we see the unfortunate results of that," said Pearson. "I don't think we should judge him out of the gate. I have a feeling this was entirely mechanical."

Lipski is a standup comedian who moved to Seattle a year ago. He and Pearson are working together on a documentary about standup comedy called "The Unbookables." Lipski is one of the performers featured in the movie.

KING 5's Glenn Farley, Elisa Hahn and Tonya Mosley contributed to this report.

Accidents do happen, it seems like King 5 is going off little information. I hope everyone is OK including the driver most all people have a heart and if I was him I don't know what I would do, but I would never get that out of my mind.

The lady that was pinned is very lucky. About 20 years ago I was working in a building on 2nd Ave and Spring street. While looking out a window I saw an SUV pin a pedestrian against the wall just inside the entrance to the parking garage (the building this happened in is no longer there, imploded to put up one of those tall office buildings). The pedestrian died on the scene. Come to find out, the driver dropped a lit cigarette and bent down to pick it up while he was driving, ended up stearing toward the garage.... Hope they all make a full recovery.

The friend said Travis was worried about his brakes on his car, so the smart thing to do is drive downtown Seattle where there are lots of hills? He should have taken the bus or monorail if he was that worried.

vandamme- The article says the first couple hit were walking on the sidewalk. They were not crossing the street so they didn't have to yield. Unless we should all be expecting drivers to drive on the sidewalks then you are totally correct. Read the article before commenting!

The article appears to have changed some now, as earlier it was all about him having a seizure and now no mention of it. I googled his name and appears he wrote a letter to the Times a few months back and seemed very passionate about hating bicyclists. Strange how the story has changed so much.

When I'm walking, I usually yield to cars. I know it's wrong. But I've never got injured or killed by a crazy driver.

This definitely is a cause for new rules to ban cars in that area. We should only have walking traffic through that area, and instead, use the roads for street merchants with more arts and crafts.

Seattlelovemonger, If you do have seizures, It is a problem you have to deal with, and I know from experience it is not easy, but having seizures is not you biggest problem. I would say your big problem is selfishness, and not having any common sense.

seattlelovemongr - I don't think anyone is trying to single YOU or anyone else with a disability out. What everyone is trying to say is that if you have a potentially dangerous condition, that it is YOUR responsibility to not only yourself, but your family, friends and everyone else, to take the proper precautions to not endanger anyone else. That line of thinking goes for ANYONE with a known condition that could potentially result in the accidental injury or death of another person. I doubt anyone thinks less of you as a person because you have a disability. I think you are very sensitive and bothered by your own condition and are projecting that. One of my best friends has a seizure disorder, bone cancer, and various other medical problems. She REFUSES (although painfully for her, she loves her freedom) to drive any where, because it would endanger everyone else if she has an episode. She chooses to be responsible. It's not about not having compassion. Its about being responsible.

Message 1 - @seattlelovemongr - I am sorry for your disability, but as someone living with an impairment, I have to say that the goal of life with a disability is to live your life as normally as you can, but we all know that doesn't always mean it will be "normal". The playing field isn't exactly level and with that, if you have a disability that has a chance to impair your ability to operate a motor vehicle, then I am sorry you should not drive. I would ask you how you would feel today if that was your parents and daughter run over by someone with a known seizure disorder? What would your family do if you were to have a seizure and crash hurting yourself and others – seems they would be in trouble There are many things in life that I had to say goodbye to and many times I can't participate in the activities of my friends and that is just the fact of life of living with an impairment.

@seattlelovemongr ...by your reasoning, I should have every right to become an airline pilot, even though I have a debilitating phobia of flying that may cause me to panic and freeze up once I get into the air, nevermind the people whose lives I endanger. Spilling coffee or walking slower on the sidewalk isn't quite the same thing as running a metal machine of several tons at some 60 mph when you know there's a chance you could lose control of it at any time. You don't have to be drunk to be an irresponsible driver. I would blame as much a person who is diabetic and knowingly gets behind the wheel with too-low blood sugar--confused and erratic--as I would someone who has been drinking. I don't know your particular circumstances other than what you've shared and I'm not here to judge your personal life. I hope you've made the best choices for yourself, for your family and for people whom you may encounter when driving. That aside, I find your logic weak and your arguments selfish.

seattlelovemongr - it's easy for them to say you shouldn't drive if you have certain medical conditions, when they don't have one. However, I am mopping up what you're spilling. life itself is a medical condition, we will all die some day and you never know when you're number is up, many will be driving when it happens, so the other's logic is illogical. Just live your life to the best of your ability, and like you said, hope for the best. :)

so what you are "all" saying is...even if I have a seizure once...and have been diagnosed with a seizure disorder...I should never drive again?...operate any moving vehicle?...ever?????.even my walking would disrupt the eb and flow of a passing by pedestrian?....I mean for goodness sakes...you make it sound as if I am am alcoholic...and just blaytantly get in the car...knowing that I am drunk and not caring about anyone or anything....which by the way is the more common stituation amoung most motorist...I get in my car and drive....not becuase it my right!!...because my work is 36 miles from where I live...and I have a family to feed and support...you act as if...I refuse to take my prescribed medication and just hop right in...taking everyones life in my hands.....but in reality...cause this isn't the Sci-Fi channel....even when I take my medication there is always that chance.....chance... that I could have a episode and not know its coming...anything I do can be a risk...

Why didn't the pedestrians have their brightly-colored umbrellas that have been provided by the City of Seattle? The umbrellas are supposed to prevent these kind of tragedies.

"so then what you are saying is that if you've had a history of Heart Attacks...you shouldn't drive either?.....If you have a cancer and been treated with kemo?..Aids patient?...Kidney dialysis?,, Diebetic?..." @seattlelovemongr: Yes to all of those, if they impair your ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and put the rest of us at danger. Driving is not a right. While a person may not be able to control when he or she has a seizure, they are most certainly able to mitigate the potential for a negative outcome by not getting behind the wheel. You're saying why should YOU live your life any differently because of an impairment? How about those poor people whose lives will probably forever be impacted by the result of a person's bad decision to drive with a medical impairment (if indeed, that is what it was and they had foreknowledge of the issue). You're not supposed to have ESP...just common sense and "compassion" for the rest of the people you put at risk every time you drive.

seattlelovemongr- You need to calm down You your self said: "as a seizure victim you never know when it will strike.....you can only take anti seizurial medications and hope for the best" Hope for the best? The doesn't sound very responsible. I really don't think the comments were lacking compassion, just stating an opinion. You are obviously very defensive about your condition. I would have to say I agree with gracer but only if the disorder is severe enough. That is not to say that all people with seizure disorders are the same. And your comments about other medical issues like heart attacks, etc. YES they should not drive if the condition is severe enough that they could potentially hurt someone else. Bottom line. That is why medical professionals can recommend that someone lose their license.

wish they'd get their stories straight before posting them. Of course, they're writing on the fly and probably posting from their smartphone from the scene and update as new and more accurate information becomes available. Unfortunately it causes misinformation to be passed along to the general public because of it. Whether the guy was intoxicated or had a seizure, either way, I feel sorry for the victims. If he had a seizure, well, it could have been his first. If he was intoxicated, he needs to spend some time in jail and have his license taken away and pay for the costs of the medical bills for the victims and the cost to the city for having to investigate and clean up his mess. I wish more people were like me. If I have even one drink, I will not drive. Period.

If he had a seizure and has a history of them, it's irresponsible of him to drive. Period. He should be liable for his inability to see a vehicle as a 2 ton bullet and driving under the guise of "I SHOULD be fine", but as he can't guarantee that, he carries the responsibility. Have an aunt with seizures and she's NEVER been allowed to have a license.
