OLYMPIA, Wash. - Shawnie McAdams remembers the day she got a letter in the mail from her insurance company.

"I felt completely lost, and couldn't understand it."

The Clinton mother says she had a clean driving record, but her car insurance company suddenly dropped her, after her estranged husband filed for bankruptcy and damaged her credit record.

"I didn't see how I could be held liable for something I had no control over," she said.

"It is really a question of fairness," says State Insurance Commissioner Mike Kriedler, who says he's heard hundreds of similar stories. He testified on Wednesday for a new House bill which would ban the use of credit scores for insurance purposes.  "Look at the factors like a person's driving records or how they maintain their property."

The insurance industry argues the current system is fair, and rewards those who have good credit.

"Study after study shows credit rating is an accurate predictive risk of loss," says Kenton Brine, the Assistant Vice-President for the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America. "People who have certain behaviors with their finance also have those behaviors with their insurance claims activity."

The Senate is also considering a similar bill, and has a hearing scheduled on the matter on January 28.

I guess there will be a lot of people driving around with no insurance since this recession has put so many out of work, unable to keep caught up on their bills, and foreclosures at a record high thanks to Fannie and Freddie and the fools in politics. Very few have a "good" credit rating now. And why should we be punished for the corruption that is DC. And the notion of "risk" that created this stupid way to insure people, is now of no use in this recession. Morons!

It used to be that your insurance premium was based on your driving record and the year and model of the vehicle that you drove. As each year went by,if you were ticket free, you could rely on your premium decreasing because your vehicle lost value. About 12 years ago the companies changed tactics to generate more money by charging premiums based on where you live(how many others were in accidents) and what others were driving. They also began to add your credit score as yet another way to hike up the price. I refused to sign on with any of them that wanted to check into my credit score(my credit's fine). Is it any wonder that drivers elect to go uninsured? It's the only way to boycott these scammers.

Sumner_son said it perfectly. Both Corrupt agencies. Both systems rigged to make sure to squeeze as much money out of people as possible. I think my credit score just slipped another 50points just for typing this. Credit Score is Just like Justice anymore. . .Your Guilty until Proven innocent. well, your never considered "Innocent". Your considered to have "got away with one"

Here's anew flash for the insurance company, 67% of the population in this country have less than perfect credit. Are they going to turn down everyone of those people. These guys are just a bunch of wild cowboys in a town without a sheriff.

It's about time they do something about this. I have a perfect driving record and was turned down by an insurance company because my credit score was not perfect. Funny, I was able to refinance my mortgage and the loan officer did not see anything wrong with my credit score????? Insurance companies are the biggest scammers I've seen.

Good, but the law should go further and illegalize use of any data not directly related to the applicant's driving record. The formula used must also be public. Soon all that personal data China Inc is collecting about us will be for sale to the insurance industry- and then who knows what far fetched information about us will be used to determine our insurance rates? How will we know what factors are being used?

California has a similar law. I think only like 4 or 5 states have laws where your credit score cannot be used to configure your insurance premiums. Insurance in California is much cheaper then it is here.

Good luck to Mike trying to fight both the insurance companies, and the credit reporting agencies. Both are hugely powerful, very corrupt industries, with long arms that stretch out and pad the pockets of legislators. He'll probably find somehow mysteriously that his own credit rating drops to about 300, and his car insurance will be canceled, as well as life insurance, health insurance, and that of his families' as well. We need reform from the practices of these leeches (especially the credit reporting agencies), and I for one am glad to see that Mike still truly represents the average citizen. One of the few in Olympia who takes his job very seriously.
