WOODINVILLE, Wash. - A hastily called city council meeting Wednesday night - on Thanksgiving Eve - is being called dirty politics by some.
The meeting of four Woodinville city council members could halt or change construction of a controversial playfield in downtown Woodinville – a $3.6 million sports field under construction in a commercial area.
The land is drained and ready for the artificial turf to be laid down on Monday.
Many people say the last-minute meeting was a sneaky thing to do.
Some think the Woodinville city council wants to change the playfield from artificial turf to grass.
Others fear the council is out to sell the playfield land to a developer.
A letter signed by the four council members Tuesday called for the special Thanksgiving Eve meeting to discuss the playfield.
But many people, including the mayor, are out of town and focused on Thanksgiving.
The last election changed the council makeup. The four in attendance are against artificial turf and would prefer grass. The other three who prefer turf couldn't make it to the meeting.
The meeting was held Wednesday night anyway in advance of Monday's laying of the turf.
"The carpet is going down on Monday. We could not do this on Monday," said Susan Boundy-Sanders, newly elected councilmember.
Any changes in the contract could jeopardize the project.
Sports enthusiasts have already donated $2 million for the field with artificial turf.
"It's shocking actually. Some of our donors are quite dismayed," said Suzette Hart, Northwest Parks Foundation.
There are suspicions that these four council members want to stop the ball field completely.
"Gut feeling is that they want to scrap the project and sell it. Some council members say it's not the highest, best use of the property," said Liz Aspen, Woodinville city council.
The four council members are going to go into executive session to meet in private.
Some people are talking about filing a lawsuit, calling this meeting illegal because of a lack of public notice.
