BELLEVUE, Wash. - Bikini barista opponents take their protest to the Bellevue City Council.

There's a new controversy brewing in Bellevue. A bikini barista stand sparked some heated debate at Monday night's city council meeting.

A small army of bikini barista opponents packed the city council chambers.

"My 5-year-old said 'Mommie, why is that 5-year-old in that coffee stand in her underwear. It's not appropriate. In my opinion it's an adult use," said Susie Goett, who has to drive by the espresso stand to take her kids to school.

Meanwhile the Knotty Bodies espresso stand greeted a steady stream of customers. The female employees wear bikinis or lingerie, raising the heat in the Crossroads neighborhood despite the cold temperatures.

"It's all about the context," says Bellevue parent Nick Bean. "When you put somebody in a thong and you put them in a fishbowl, it's now been elevated to spectacle."

Many also complain the espresso stand sits next door to a children's park, and too close to schools.

"Tell all your friends not to patronize them," says Bellevue Deputy Mayor Claudia Balducci. "Tell your friends not to patronize the businesses that they're sitting on their land. I'm not going to gas up at the gas station anymore."

The city found two code violations so far. The business doesn't have a sign use permit, and is not allowed to have a drive-through window given the limited space in the parking lot.

"The permit was specifically conditioned that a drive-through would not be allowed for this particular business," said Mike Brennan, director of the city's Development Services Department.

Customer Derek Tighe came to the stand with his 2-year-old son in the back seat. He says it's much ado about nothing.

"I'm just worried that if we say girls can't dress here and do this then what are we going to say next?" he said.

The business has applied for a business license from the state but hasn't received it yet. But the Bellevue city council members admit all these violations are likely just short-term issues for the espresso stand.

The owner could not be reached for comment.

College money? hhahahahahaha. Yeah right. Those girls will never go to college.....they're next week's Highway 99 prostitutes.....or next year's assaulted and mutilated body found in some water in Bellevue. SAD. Didn't they shut down some of these stands already for prostitution? I love how they shut down the drive thru, so now all the sad little men have to actually get out of their car and walk up for everyone to see them. hahaha. That's awesome.

A job is a job. i bet some of these women cant find a job elsewear. what i dont understand is why it matters. for the most part they are wearing bathingsuits!!! so what if its a water park next to it other women and teens girls will be wearing the same thing. they should chang it to no langeri. thats understandable to be upset about that. but if its a bikini who cares they will see it at the water park.

By the way, isn't this Thanksgiving week. Why does everyone have so much time on their hands to complain, rather than give thanks to the positive things in their lives. Just don't go if you are offended.

Hadeev You're an idot. Don't ever speak again. Because I read your post I am just a little dumber because of it. Clearly stated in your first post ALL of the WOMEN you talked to. Say's volumes there. Of course the young lady wasn't attractive we know this because you say so. How about this MIND YOUR OWN EFFING BUSINESS. I think all religious people shouldn't be allowed to wear anything religious out in public. Fat women shouldn't wear spandex, but they do. WWJD I think he would head to Bellevue for a cup of joe and look at a hot body his father created.

All it's going to take is one really bad accident with a hot beverage in that tiny shack for those women to stop wearing bikinis on the job. Personally, I wouldn't want to eat at a restaurant if the chef and waitstaff were dressed in nothing more than underwear. Ew! When I was pregnant 26 years ago, there was a local doughnut maker I would see at night kneading dough with no shirt on. It was summertime in NYC, and God only knows how much sweat may have dripped into that dough. Let me also add, he was a pretty hairy guy. Ew again!

Two summers ago, I was in my local supermarket here in Connecticut when a teenaged girl and her "dad" came into the store. The girl was wearing a bikini, and high heels, and casually parked her behind against one of the produce bins. They were in the store for close to an hour making their way through every aisle. I approached the man at the checkout stand and asked him why he didn't make the girl put on clothes or just leave her at home. All the women I spoke with said they found her to be offensive, while the men were just eyeballing her every move. The girl wasn't shapely, or even attractive. Simply put, that was nasty to look at, and the store manager should've removed her from the premises. Considering Washington state has a high ratio of serial killers and murderers compared to many states, you would think someone with some common sense would come up with a better way of enterprising without potentially putting women in harm's way at the hands of perverts.

IM SAD, why dont I have a bikini Barista stand near my house!?, Fyi I think its more power to the women to do this, so long as they arn't being scandlous and flashing people. Its a life style, let them make tips and earn college money funds or w/e the reason why they do it in the first place. If thoes of who DONT like it then DONT go there.

Dede'78 Are you trying to differentiate between a coffee barrista and a school teacher? At least be logical in your argument. I find it very hard to believe that, that girl sitting in that booth with that little window is so upsetting to you, while you drive by at 35 MPH, on your way to church. You would have to look long and hard to see anything that could be con screwed as offensive. While it may be inappropriate to wear underwear to the store, it is not illegal. So is your argument over whats legal or illegal or is it what YOU determine as appropriate or inappropriate? If I want to play a guitar in my underwear in the middle of time square, I should be allowed to. PS : Just what is the reason they are undergarments?

I don't have a problem if it is bikinis they are wearing. It's the undergarments, thongs, bras etc. They are "undergarments" for a reason. Do we all start wearing our underwear to the grocery store? To the mall? I know, let's wear them to work.... It's not the bikinis that are a problem. Would it be appropriate for teachers to wear their underwear to school. Yes, there is a difference, a big one. Underwear belongs under your clothes.

What is all of the fuss about? No laws have been broken. If you don't like the coffee stand, don't go there. As for those people who feel they can force their moral or religious views on others, shut up.

I have to say, I am appalled! Of all the horrible things that go on in this city and in the world, all we have to complain about is girls in bikini's selling coffee? come on folks, get a grip!. Maybe lorabelvue is right and the end is near. But i somehow think that whether or not there is a bikini coffee stand in bellevue makes absolutely no difference concerning that end. Maybe if we (myself included) were all as motivated to speak out on issues that are actually significant in todays world, we would see a difference. I guess it is more improtant to sit back, sip our starbucks and point the finger at anyone that does not share our narrow views, then go home smiling because we "made a difference". sad... By the way, if my daughter decided earn her way as a bikini barrista, i would be proud of her for being a working member of our society. Get a grip folks!

I happen to live a couple of blocks away. This not an innocent "bikini" espresso stand.. Even I would tolerate this. They are in bra and undies. It just brings sleaziness to an area that is family oriented. Unless you live close by to this great little neighborhood, then please be quiet.

Yogi.................so am I to take the same understanding from you that those ladies that wear a bikiini to the beach or a resort pool have no respect for themselves? Give me break! It is just like the old saying from the military, "if you got em... smoke them. Lorabellevue, go to church and pray about it. Drive another route with your kids. Are we going to ban Hooters now? If you do not like, don't look at it. Shark, right on..........I would like to at least to see all of the ladies that are protesting this that might need Weight Watcher and the others that cannot afford their coffee prices. Had my car washed at one these in Everett and my church Christian wife was with me and said, "we all have to make a living and sex sells. They are not having sex with these customes. Take a break for those that are offended in Swellview, the place will stay, I guarantee you or there will be a hell of al lawsuit. I don't even drink coffee. Johnmagiic..........right on.

lorabellevue, leave God out of the arguement, he is the one who created us and our wonderful bodies. It was us who have ruined what he gave us by being vain and finding it disgusting like you do. So don't preach about what you believe is an abomination of God's gift to us. Or have you forgotten "Judge not, lest ye be judged yourself"?

It's no secret these are bikini stands, I don't go there cause they make a lousy cup of coffee. If you don't want your kids to see a woman in a bikini, don't go to Wild Waves or the beach. Women wear even less there. If you don't like it go to Starbucks... If I want a lousy cup of coffee made by a half naked lady, I'll have my wife do it, tell her how good it is and get "lucky" later!!!

I think its fine to serve coffee wearing a bikini or lingre, whats the problem? Why do some many people get soo uptight about the body? For those who think its inmoral, didn't God give us these great bodies? The problem is with the people who throw stones when they themselfs live in glass houses. Yes, there should be limits on what can be seen/read on billboards, etc like I don't want to see "SEX ON MY FACE" advertised as their drink special, but hell I would open one up myself if I had the money to do so. Guess what people, if you don't like it, don't go. But don't tell these people not to work there trying to make a buck unless you're willing to pay them not too.

Really the 5yr old's parents couldn't figure out that "knottie bodies" had scantily clad women working there? Susie you're an idiot! It's okay to walk around the cities, beaches and pools in bikinis but you can't work at an coffee stand without the fat ugly women getting all bent out of shape. Maybe if you all would go to the gym you wouldn't notice the girls in the coffee stand. LEAVE THEM ALONE! WWJD?

I think that it is time to allow them to do their coffee making, as this coffee stand is receiving thousands of dollars in curiosity dollars by being on the news and in the papers, and people will stop by to see what all the fuss is about. In time, like all things they come and go. Just choose not to patronize if you do not want to see that. Personally, it is something that I just won't go to, I will not place judgment on anyone else.

Remember people, we must differentiate between what is legal, versus what is merely controversial. That is the fundamental basis of any argument that anyone can have on this website.
