RENTON, Wash. - A Renton woman is among several people coming forward who say a call they received left them very concerned.
Nancy Brown saved the voice mail that was left on her phone on Tuesday. The caller claimed to be Investigator Williams, and she wanted to reach Nancy's 25-year-old son about a criminal investigation. The caller even left a docket number.
It left Brown asking, "Did he get in trouble for something? As a parent you want to know what happened."
King 5 did a check of state records, and the docket number left in the phone message did not appear to match any court cases. The call came from phone number 1-855-775-2578. A web search turned up several complaints from people who claimed they received harassing phone calls from that number.
As for Brown, she took her concerns to the Better Business Bureau. BBB spokesperson David Quinlan said the call is likely not what it seems.
"What it looks like is it's these phantom debt collectors out there, and they are trying to disguise themselves as investigators," said Quinlan.
Quinlan added that the callers are going after alleged debtor's friends, siblings, and parents.
King 5 tried to reach the person who contacted Brown, but no one at 1-855-775-2578 would answer questions on the record about the phone calls.
