WENATCHEE, Wash. - Investigators have set up a new tipline in the murder of 17-year-old Mackenzie Cowell.

Police are asking people who may have seen anyone walking on Squilchuck Highway or South Methow between Pitcher Canyon and Wenatchee the evening of last Tuesday, Feb. 9 to call 509-663- 9911.

An autopsy confirmed Tuesday that the body found in Eastern Washington is that of Mackenzie Cowell. The autopsy also revealed that her death was a homicide, but the cause of death has not yet been released.

The body was found Saturday on a beach about 25 miles from Wenatchee.

Last Tuesday, Cowell left the Academy of Hair Design where she worked, walked to the parking lot and got into her car. Surveillance cameras recorded her driving away the school at 3:30 in the afternoon. It was the last time she was seen.

Four days later, investigators found her 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix parked in a rural area of Chelan County known as Pitcher Canyon. Her purse was locked inside the car.

On Saturday, people walking along the beach at Crescent Bar found what's believed to be her body. Investigators searched the beach along the Columbia River and canvassed the neighborhood.

"It's very frustrating from an investigative aspect," said Douglas County Sheriff Harvey Gjesdal. "The guys spent countless hours out there. We have guys from Grant, Douglas and Chelan county all working very hard on the case."

So far there are no suspects and no new leads in the case. Gjesdal said the details of the case are forcing them to cover a lot of ground.

"It's a very unusual case in that the young woman lived in Douglas County, worked and went missing from Wenatchee, her car was found in a remote part of Chelan County, yet her body was found in a very remote part of Douglas County," he said.

Neighbors say the riverside property where the girl's body was found has been vacant for months. But they noticed some strange changes to the yard Saturday morning, the same day her body was found.

Gary and Judy Ovenell's home overlooks the crime scene along the Columbia River.

"Saturday morning Gary said, 'Look at the brodie marks down there. That's really unusual,'" said Judy Ovenell.

Although the property has been vacant, they say they noticed new tire tracks there Saturday morning.

"There was something I just grabbed onto, focused on it, because it was so strange, 'cause that place, anybody hadn't been to for so long," said Gary Ovenell.

Around noon the same day, a young female's body was found along the shore with her feet in the water. Investigators found evidence of homicide at the scene and inside the vacant home.

In any homicide investigation, public input can be critically important. Investigators are hoping to hear from anyone who may have a tip.

Hey bobknows get your facts straight, if the coroner who has been trained to tell how someone has died then trust what they say and DO NOT POST YOUR THEORIES HAS REAL FACTS!!!!!! Taken from the wenatcheeworld news paper- Steve Clem, Douglas County prosecutor and coroner, declined to release the cause of death following an autopsy. He would say only that it was a homicide. Asked specifically about that, Jones said, “In this part of the case, we feel our results are a very important part of the investigation, possibly being able to tie him or her to the crime scene.” l Lets stop talking about how pretty she was and instead pass the word around that there is a killer or killers in our state help find them the family and friends are sending texts to spread the word in hopes of finding the killer help the family has if she was your family member If you feel you do know something about this crime call the tip line

My heart goes out to the family and friends of Mackenzie Cowell. My thoughts and prayers are with you. To most of the posters here I have some advice, you should read Tracy Warner's Editorial in today's Wenatchee World, "Our Rumors Can Cause Great Harm". It's very enlightening. http://www.wenatcheeworld.com/news/2010/feb/17/our-rumors-can-cause-great-harm/

bobknows said: "The vacant "crime scene" beach house where her body was found was listed for sale by her mother ". That turns out to be untrue.

The speculation in Wenatchee, and in the Wenatchee World Newspaper comments, is that she died accidental at a teen party. Her car was found at a common meeting place for teens since before Bob attended Wenatchee High School half a century ago. The vacant "crime scene" beach house where her body was found was listed for sale by her mother -- so she knew it was vacant and could get access. The published evidence includes tire marks from doing donuts or "brodies" on the lawn of the beach house. Killers are very unlikely to call attention to themselves by doing donuts on the lawn at a murder scene. County authorities are refusing to release the autopsy results, but they did not say before the autopsy that the body had bullet holes, knife wounds, or any obvious cause of death. She may well have walked along the river to "walk it off" after drinking too much and passed out in the water. Or she may have ODed on drugs. Rather than a murder this is looking like a tragic accident.

I was checking on the status of this girl when I stubbled apon this story, I would like to clear up a major error in it. You stated "Four days later, investigators found her 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix parked in a rural area of Chelan County known as Pitcher Canyon." hummmm no this car was found at 10pm the same night she went missing. We are trying to protect our daughter's here in the wenatchee Valley. It would be best that you get your story straight before you publish it.

As a native Washingtonian, all the serial killers and rapist that I remember were white males.....so much for illegal immigrant theory. Remember Ted Bundy, Green River Killer (who loved to read his bible at work), the guy who was a military reserve officer who drove a corvette and the guy who was the Spokane rapist. All these guys looked like the least threatening individuals. Scary timess!

"Legal Notice: Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law." Go call the blue gun thug "tip line" if you dare. You have been put on notice. Sorry about the young woman. But if you value your behind, don't tell them the time of day. It will be used against you if they can figure out a way.

All the young ladies out there: You know you're going to die once you get abducted, right? If you don't want to be a victim, then ----> Fight back hard as you scream! Kick his groin, scratch his eyes, and break his nose with your palm-heel or hammer fist. Of course, your skill doesn't come naturally, especially in the life/death situation like that, so practice ahead!

Less than a year ago, a young Cashmere woman was held at gunpoint and being led to a green truck . fortunately the neighbor was watching from a window and acted quickly. She got away but so did the man and he was never caught. There seems to be some similarities with what is being reported in the media and I hope they have been talking with the woman who got away to ask for more details. I really feel that we could be looking at a second victim if the first gal wouldn't have gotten away. I certainly hope that these are all being considered in finding this man. Watch your back girls and watch out for each other. Never go willingly with anyone. Wether at gunpoint or not, scream, they don't want attention drawn to them. Stay in view of others. And keep others in your view.

IMO this is not going to be too hard to figure out. The person who did it had to know about that house being vacant, and he drove a truck that left tire tracks. That means he is a local w/connections to that somewhat secluded house or lived nearby. Why he left her body outside along the river instead of in the house where she would not be discovered for awhile is strange. But this is definately a local and most likely someone she knew.

This article is about the possible fact this may be Mackenzie Cowell. It is NOT about immigrant farmers or how you raised your daughter. In one respect, I hope this is Mackenzie. Knowing is always better than not knowing. If it is you Mackenzie, rest in peace baby!

- "The same theme has haunted the state and areas where more agricultural workers live ( Immigrant farmers) some of the victims of abduction, car jacking and rape that have survived have mentioned the abductors speaking Spanish" Well I am glad someone took a look at the history of Serial Killers in this area. Might I remind you of a notorious good looking white male serial killer in the area? or do the initials TB ring a bell? Sounds to me that the problem here is not race, but rather the fact that an innocent person's life was taken. Please reserve your racist comments until further progress has been made. As your comments target a whole group of people and not the perpetrator. And I am glad you have raised your daughter to be the "Lion" in your example, though it sounds to me that you were more interested in sharing your pride than a real opinion on this case.

This isnt that unusual ..... There have been oher women car jacked and raped .... car stolen etc. The same theme has haunted the state and areas where more agricultural workers live ( Immigrant farmers) some of the victims of abduction, car jacking and rape that have survived have mentioned the abductors speaking spanish .... I am not going to elude to anymore here than I have but for the publics sake I am going to say this " Crimes against Women and children have escalated" It is time to start raising your daughters with the notion that yes ......... you are pray ! unfortunetly. I raised my daughter to know the difference between being the "Lion or the Lamb" and everytime a group of obnoxious creeps look at her, such as when they pull up next to our car.... I am proud to say my beautiful daughter is not afraid to look ugly and growl bearing teeth. It is kind of funny, but she knows the difference between a kind gesture or a taunting wolf. Teach your kids to protect themselves !
