AUBURN, Wash. -- More than 70 cats living in a small camper in Auburn were seized Thursday evening by animal authorities.

King County Animal Control services counted 74 cats and one dog inside Jerry Reynolds' camper on the back of his small pick-up truck.

The camper was called into police after a neighbor reported it parked near a medical center.

Reynolds, who said he is a breeder from Moses Lake, said he has been living in the camper for the last five weeks, wanting to be closer to his girlfriend who is in the hospital.

Reynolds said he had no other choice but to take the cats with him in the camper.

"It was better than letting them go," he said.

Reynolds knew the name of almost every cat he handed to animal control authorities.

Each cat was removed placed in carriers to be examined by veterinarians. When carriers ran out, some cats had to go two in one carrier.

It is unknown when or if the cats may be allowed up for adoption.

For information on adopting a pet from King County Regional Animal Services visit their website.

@bitemex5, I agree the conditions were awful and there are organizations that would have been happy to provide help, but how do we know about those organizations? I suspect that we all know about them because of the internet. If he thought he would only be away a few days, but then things dragged on unexpectedly, then he may have been scared or ashamed to ask for help. Usually I'm for VERY strong anti-cruelty charges, but this seems more like a case of unexpected circumstances (the friend in the hospital) and constraints related to poverty. He did not abandon them to die and he should get a point for that.

@realitychk You find help you dont take your pets with you not that many. There are animal organizations around to help or you stay home. Sad situation all the way around. These cats didnt derseve to be put in a tiny camper with barley any room to move around. It has to be like a straight jacket. Come one get real. I am sure the litter boxes werent cleaned as offten as they should with that many cats. The smell must have been bad. Unlcean unsanitary unsafe is cruel

This is sad, he is down and then kicked by the so called AC, it is control alright, most of these cats will be PTS as only this man cared for them. Ducking is right, they are not sick , looked well cared for and he could have just left them to die. but he did not. I say help him instead.

He doesn't seem like a typical hoarder, but more like a hobby breeder that loves his animals, but had a couple bad breaks in life recently. Not that I support this type of breeding at all, but the animals did not looked to be caked with dirt, scabby, or starving, although of course conditions were not anything close to suitable. Hopefully the man welcomed the help and I hope they will also help him find a better temporary living situation as well.

Too bad they don't talk about when the Kent Shelter (King County Animal Control)left cats OUTSIDE in below freezing temperatures in carriers! AC Officers tried to file charges and wrote formal complaints against their own employer. GOOGLE that one.

Oh leave the poor guy alone! These animal raids never used to happen... this is something that has sparked up outta nowhere over people crying about animal rights. As long as they were inside, fed, and being taken care of.. why is it any of our business to swoop in and "rescue" these dumb cats? If its his perogative to have 70 cats in a camper, then so be it. We need to start BUTTING OUT OF OTHER PEOPLES BUSINESS! If he wants to live in filth, let him! Those cats are clearly just fine.... maybe a bit dirty, but shoot.. if anyone pet my dog right now, they'd think I was abusing him from how long its been since hes had a bath!! haha. So whos to say what this old man can or can't do? sheesh!

for anyone who is saying that this situation is okay... did you look at the video? the inside of that camper is caked with filth. and look at the cats' fur... it is ruffled and not laying flat. that happens when a cat isn't cleaning itself routinely, which means the cat is either old or ill. i hope that the Siamese Rescue Center is able to find foster homes for these cats until they can be adopted, and that this guy gets maybe 4 of the cats back, and some mental health care.

realitybites2, snowshoeand ragdollcats looks like burmese or siamese/tonkanese with cream or white patches. There are many , many breeds of cats with colourpoints like these. Regardless, at least they were all being taken care of as best as he could do.

Hey, this guy packed up and moved so he could be closer to his girlfriend. He brought all his feline friends, so that he could care for them and wouldn't be a burden on anyone else.I have no problem with a guy whos primary purpose is to take care of his " little kitties " . I'd buy him a beer.

How can he be a breeder? Those are not purebred Siamese I see white patches on some.....not buying the story, he's a hoarder.

I have 1 cat in a 30ft motor home and think that is plenty. I see lots with a few big dogs. But over 70 in a small camper is beyond belief. Think they better check in Moses Lake to see if he has a breeders license. And if he does they need to cancel it. That has to be a dang calm dog!!!

uh, yeah, they are better off in shelters (talking to you "realitychk") because they will each be going to loving homes of their own, where they won't have to compete with 73 other animals for attention and space. the king co. shelter doesn't euthanize on basis of space. if they don't have space for a cat or it isn't adopted in a timely fashion (months), the cat is transported to one of the many rescue organizations in the area where they will hopefully be noticed faster

This is not a spacious motor home, this is a compact camper that sits on the bed of a pick-up truck. Anyone who believes that this is fair and humane to the animals does not grasp the situation.

Even if it's cramped in there, there are people living in their cars and you don't take their kids away because the family is living in a car and just give them to someone else. It's wrong to take away healthy, well-fed and clean cats. He looks very sad. I hope he gets them back, but I doubt he will.

At least he didn't leave the cats to fend for themselves, while he was gone. He seemed to love them enough to know their names and they all looked very well cared for. I am sure that with beautiful cats like that will find a good home and make someone very happy.

The cats looked well cared for. It was only meant to be a temporary situation it sounds like. It's sad that it had to come to that. I admire him for not bailing on them and leaving them to fend for themselves wherever he actually lives. I respect his love for the animals and caring for their wellbeing.

@bitemex5: say you were in an emergency situation and you had to travel with a group. If you were eating and had toilet facilities would you want to be removed from your family groups? What is wrong with people that they can't take into account that this man is trying to see his significant other? Is he supposed to give up everything when he has a way to keep his cats fed, littered and with him? So let's see...you condemn him if he doesn't take them and then you condemn him if he does take them. Are only a few people sanctioned to have "pets"? And then if so, why do you think you'd be "approved" to have pets? I

So let's see...man takes cats in camper because girlfriend is ill and he can't find someone to take care of them. He takes care of them in camper and they are healthy and cared for but they are taken from him. Hmmmm. All of the so called "do-gooders" who feel that these cats (known by name) are better off in shelters are misinformed. There are so many people that are completely clueless and think that it (taking of personal property..ie: animals) is only going to happen to someone else. Why is it not better for cats who are well fed and not mistreated to go with person they know who cares for them so that he can visit his girlfriend? Is it better to rip them away from someone who knows them by name because another thinks this is wrong? People are out of control with their judgement of others and animals in general. If these cats are fed, healthy and loved, why disrupt their inner karma to make YOU feel better?
