SEATTLE -- Another sea lion was discovered dead in the Nisqually Delta area near Olympia.

A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration enforcement officer said the body was found over the weekend. A necropsy will be conducted later today or Tuesday.

Until then, he told KING 5 News, we won't know if it is the ninth sea lion shot to death in the last few weeks.

Last week, officers investigated the carcasses of seven sea lions found in the same area of the Nisqually and one found on a West Seattle beach. All of them had been shot.

One of the sea lions is a Stellar sea lion, which is on the Endangered Species List. All sea lions are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Killing a sea lion can result in thousands of dollars in fines and up to one year in jail.

Reward offered

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is offering a reward of $10,000 to any person who provides information to the authorities leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for shooting sea lions.

BraveNewWherld...someone needs to beam you up to the mothership. Can someone tell me the reason why all sea lions are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act? Or is it just another excuse for the federal goverment to spend tax dollars doing necropsies?

I was going to type something ignorant to be like one of the cool kids. But I decided to type facts instead. The "over fishing" is done by commercial fishermen. Mostly by our lovely neighbors to the north. (know what I am talking abut?) This particular Tribe has two fish hatcheries. (STOP) Now tell me how many commercial fishermen have fish hatcheries???

Seems to me that someone should take a look at who's fishing right now...the tribes? I think I saw tribal boats in Pt. Susan Bay this last weekend. Is it open season for them now? During the humpie run, there were sea lions jumping in and out of the nets. That's gotta be frustrating for anyone. That being said, the tribes should practice better fisheries management so as not to overfish as is the tendency when the fish are running and nobody's looking.

Looks like the tribe is doing a good job of getting rid of the salmon eating sea lions.

By the hands of the heartless, millions of innocent human children are brutally slaughtered every year for the convenience of concupiscence, yet few raise an eyebrow. A few animals are killed by those having the same mindset, and it becomes a great tragedy. Indeed, ours is a disgusting society.

nu4you, you must be new around here. If it's the Nisqually delta, then chances are about 99.9% that it's tribal net fishermen. My question is, are they immune from the fines and penalties? I think they might be, but I just don't know.

nu4you, you were doing OK, until the "Same thing as controlling Coyote numbers in cattle country" line. The best friend of the Coyote is the wool grower and rancher who uses poor husbandry practices.

Let the poor creature live! So what if they eat your salmon! Stop overfishing our waters and there will be enough for everyone.... eventually! This is criminal!!!

@ nu4you - - Sea Lions aren't destroying fish runs. Human Beings have already destroyed fish runs. What is left is so miniscule that what the Sea Lions take seems like a huge proportion and makes it seem like they are destroying fish runs. Again, Human Beings did that already. Every living system on this planet is in decline - much of it due directly to Human Beings not treading lightly enough on the earth. We still haven't learned how we must live on the earth, as reflected in the attitudes of those who think Human Beings should still take the lion's share of what is left and if another creature dares compete with us we should exercise our "right" to kill it, or kill all of them so we have no competition and can have everything (that is left) for ourselves.

Although, it's probably not a Native, just a White Guy who likes to fish, and is tired of being terrorized by them at the docks, loosing fish/gear to them (Which said white guy had to work for, and pay for, including tax), and watching them destroy salmon/steelhead runs by gorging themselves on the returning spawners at the locks/dams put in their way to their spawning grounds. Same thing as controlling Coyote numbers in cattle country.

I think someone, or someones family member or friend, needs a good 2012 salmon season and is hoping they don't get caught for this hidious crime. I'll pray they catch the shooter(s).

Agree with ameso... tribes keep repeating that they "honor" Mother Earth". Ha.... have you ever seen the way they honor her with all the trash, junk autos, etc. around their rez houses? Hopefully NOAA will catch them... tribal fisheries people will do nothing.

The only ground spending a considerable amount or time in the Nisqually River is tribal gillnetters.
