MARYSVILLE, Wash. - In an instant, a Snohomish neighborhood is changed forever.

Two couples who lived across the street from each other were killed when the car they were in collided with a suspected drunk driver on Highway 9 in Marysville Sunday night.

The Washington State Patrol says the suspect ran a stop sign and may have been speeding. After the accident, the driver admitted to drinking eight beers before getting behind the wheel.  And, he allegedly had a blood alcohol level of 0.123, which is one and a half times the legal limit.

Among those killed were Melissa Agerup and her husband Brad Agerup, who was the head athletic trainer at Mariner High School in Everett.

Monday night, a large crowd of students and staff gathered for a candlelight vigil.

"Agerup was really an example of how you should live your life and the type of person you should be. Whether it's on the field, off the field, in the classroom. just in everyday life," said one student.

He was described as a teacher, mentor and a friend. Some even called him the face of Mariner athletics.  He and his wife leave behind two daughters.

"A very compassionate person. Someone who truly, truly cared about the students. Not only as students but as people," said head football coach John Ondriezek.

Also killed were Tom and Hilda Woods, who leave behind three grown daughters and two grandchildren.

According to our newspaper partner the Seattle Times, the suspect may have been under Department of Corrections supervision.  After the crash, he got out of the vehicle and ran, but later returned to the scene.

He wasn't the only one who was arrested for driving under the influence. An investigator with the Snohomish County Medical Examiner's office is also being investigated for DUI after troopers smelled alcohol on his breath when he showed up at the scene.

The 48-year-old is an eight year employee with the Medical Examiner's office. The State Patrol says the crime scene investigation was not compromised.

I am a sophomore Currently attending Mariner High School, and I have only met Mr. Agerup once when he told me to pull my pants up. I kindly said okay but in my head I was saying some pretty hurtful stuff. I deeply apologize and now wish that I would've known him more; because when i bring him up people don't just say "oh yeah i remember him." I can see it in their eyes that they deeply care about him. And today at the end of school we watched a video about him; and what all the students and staff members had to say about him. I started to cry. I did not start to cry because i saw others crying. I started to cry because when i saw that picture of him, with his two daughters and his wife, the first thing that came into my mind is what i was thinking about when he told me to pull my pants up. Please forgive me Mr. Agerup and you will always be in my heart.

Mr. Agerup.. Ohmygod.. When people told me about this, I didn't want to believe it. It was very upseting and shocking to hear what has happened to him and his wife. Myself, and all the other students at Mariner, will miss him terribly. He was quite a good role model for most students; He coached, like, 3 sports, He was an amazing teacher, He was super nice to everyone, He was just a really great guy. I pray for Mr. Agerup's family as well as his neighbors. Rest In Peace: Mr. Agerup, Mrs. Agerup, Mr. Woods, and Mrs. Woods. I hope for the best for the two families. -Anitra Nicole

Why is it that the drunks are usually the only ones that don't get hurt? I think a 1st DUI arrest should be 6 months in jail. If they cause an accident like hitting a tree, power pole or some other object it should be 2 years. Someone gets hurt it should be 5-10 years. Someone gets killed it should be 20 years. These idiots know that getting behind the wheel of a car after drinking is dangerous. Those two girls have lost both their parents because of the thoughtlessness of this piece of trash. They also need to get tougher on the people serving (Or over-serving) in bars. Mowt drunk drivers are coming from a bar. Maybe the threat of shutting them down for a year instead of just fining them would get them to be more responsible. My condolences go out to the familes of both couples, and the students. Many teachers are heroes to their students and encourage them to follow their dreams and help them along the way. Mr. Agerup sounds like he was one of those teachers.

Mr. Agerup was one of the best teachers I ever had. He taught me in his health and sports medicine classes. I was so engaged in the content of his classes, it helped me pursue my career in nursing. He will surely be missed. My prayers and thoughts go out to both families. I am sorry for all the loss of lives taken yesterday.

Very well spoken Sumner_son. I agree, the other headline news item of course has been very disturbing. I saw an officer being interviewed who visibly upset that this coward had been released from custody...he said, we need come together now and do something about this! That is so true! Reading this article - this very sad news item about this accident - their tragic death, it definitely brought tears to my eyes too! That could be you, me...someone close, wow my heart goes out to the families of the 4 victims of this tragic car accident. So very tragic. I hope the person who is at fault realizes that they have forever just altered not only their own life but lives of many others. Was all that booze, the reckless driving and the stupity of getting behind the wheel while intoxicated really worth it all? Wake up people! Let's stop this pain and suffering, parents help & teach your own kids about this, don't leave it up to others! Stop all this before it gets much worse

Sumner_son, I totally agree with all you said. This was not an accident. In reading the RIP Facebook page you can see all the young people who think so highly of Mr. Agerup, his wife and friends also. My cousin was in one of his classes last year and only had wonderful things to say about Mr. Agerup. My only hope is that this DWI murder has an impact on these high school students and will save lives. My thoughts and prayers are with the two couples and their families.

I personally knew Mr. Agerup as one of his student trainers. To think, that it was only four years ago when he was telling me to put my foot in a bucket of iced water. I was really close Coach Ondriziek, and they need a trainer so they asked me to be one of them. Working with Mr. Agerup has been very memorable. He's always patient with me, and if there's one thing I can remember about him, it's his smile. The last time I saw him was 2 months ago, very concerned about my health. I never knew he would pass away so soon. I figured my future kids could still meet him. Condolences to the family and may you rest in peace...I hope you and your wife will be looking down at heaven always smiling upon us.

For those of you who have Facebook there is a Facebook page in memory of Mr. Agerup. It is RIP Brad Agerup. It's an open forum page so that those who knew him can share their stories and memories of him. God bless the families of those who lost loved ones in the crash.

In one day, we loose 4 Police Officers gunned down by one person, and 4 civilians mowed down by one drunk driver. The officer assassination grabs all of the headlines, while this crime gets a small section halfway thru the noontime news. While we are all outraged about four of our Finest loosing their lives in a premeditated senseless act, where is the outrage over two couples loosing their lives in another senseless act? We read all too often, about every two weeks on average in the Puget Sound area, of a drunk driver killing innocent civilians. Has it become so commonplace that we as a populace turn a deaf ear every time a drunk driver murders someone? In my book, that's what it is - murder. It is NO accident. Drinking then getting behind the wheel of a one-to-two ton bullet, then aiming it at people is akin to murder. My heart goes out to the families and friends who have to suffer the anguish as a result of both of these heinous events.
