BOISE -- A Boise man has been charged with arson after authorities say he set his BMW on fire to get out of making car payments.

Steven M. Carter, 25, turned himself in at the Ada County Jail last night.

Ada County Sheriff’s deputies found the smoldering remains of a 2006 BMW 325I on a dirt road in the desert near Kuna early in the morning of Feb. 4, 2014. The car was nearly destroyed by fire.

Carter, who is the owner, admitted he drove the BMW out to the desert, doused it with gas and set it on fire. He still owes the bank $20,000.

Carter is charged with third-degree arson, a crime that is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. He is due back in court on March 18.
