MUKILTEO, Wash. – Someone made off with a storage container overnight Sunday with about 25 tons of scrap metal inside.

The container was outside Terrene Engineering Inc. The business set aside the metal after production. It was going to be recycled and worth about $10,000.

"We've had a few people try to cut the lock and get a little bit of stuff," co-owner Colin Chadwick said.

The thief also badly damaged three company vans parked in the parking lot. Chadwick believes the thief backed into the vans to try and secure the storage container to the back of the truck.

The container was found on Monday three miles away in the parking lot of an Auto Parts store in South Everett. It was empty.

Scrap metal theft is on the rise again as the price of metal goes up. Chadwick says it’s selling for about $400 per ton.

Motion sensor cameras captured video of a semi-truck backing up to the storage container Sunday night. Mukilteo Police plan to enhance the video to try and ID the driver.

"Pretty bold," said Chadwick. "It's surreal."

@roblh21, I think you are confusing meth with heroin. Meth users don't go through withdrawals like you describe. You don't feel sick when you don't have your dope - uncomfortable and on edge, certainly, but you're not physically sick like you would be if you're a heroin addict. Meth addiction is far more psychological than physical, which is why it's so hard to quit. I'm not saying that meth users wouldn't steal that metal because more than likely that's who did it. There's just a lot of misinformation out there about meth addiction and I wanted to straighten that out. I know, because I was one for 20 years. And I never, ever resorted to crime of any kind to support my habit, by the way. Some do, but not all by any means. Please don't make generalizations like that, because it's inaccurate.

Maybe I am late in the game of knowing what meth heads need, but metal is important to them???

Must have taken more than one person to move 25 tons of metal!

@vulcancat, most reputable scrap dealers have already implemented the suggestions you have made.

My place of employment in Pacific Washington has also had scrap steel stolen from our scrap bin. (only about 5 tons) We all figured that it was a meth-head, and we just locked the scrap metal in a razor wire yard. You see with Meth, people will actually go business to business in order to steal metal, so the user can feel normal. If they do not get high, they do not feel normal, they feel sick. They then come to the conclusion that they should not be sick, so they must steal. If one is ever tempted to try one hit of the meth, I urge you not, because before you know it , you are going to be breaking into your own parents home and stealing everything they got to get a couple days worth of feeling "normal". Don't believe me? Trust me.

The easiest way to stop metal thieves is to do what they did to stop meth makers from buying over-the-counter drugs to make their meth - Make the people recycling the materials produce ID. The recyclers are complicit in metal thievery and should ALL be held accountable. Make them take photos of people with the materials they're recycling and get copies of photo ID to provide to police. Make them account for every ounce of scrap they sell to China and perhaps the thefts will stop.
