CHELAN, Wash. – Two Pacific Northwest towns have been named among the eight best towns in America for a lakeside summer getaway, according to Budget Travel magazine.
The magazine notes that everywhere you look in the Central Washington town of Chelan, "some ruddy-cheeked soul is kayaking, swimming, fishing, or windsurfing on the 50-mile-long glacier-fed lake." The article points to the 100-year-old Stillwater Inn and the ferry rides through the gorges as some of the reasons to visit.
In Oregon, you only have to go 25 miles west of Portland to find Forest Grove near Hagg Lake. The article says the town has historic quirks. The lake, just nine miles away, has plenty of rainbow trout for fishermen as well as picnic areas, boat launches and 15 miles of hiking trails.
Other locations listed in the survey:
Grand Marais, Minn. on Lake Superior
Dillon, Colo. on Lake Dillon
Rangeley, Maine on Rangley Lakes
Leland, Mich. on Lake Michigan and Lake Leelanau
Truckee, Calif. on Donner Lake
Oakland, Md. on Deep Creek Lake
