An important obstacle in finding employment for veterans is their inability to brand and market themselves. It can be challenging to articulate the totality of the military experience and put it into terms that employers can understand. Many post-9/11 veterans, especially those under the age of 25, have never created a resume or interviewed with an employer. They often feel that their military experience does not apply to civilian life, and leave it off their resumes altogether! To remedy this, Hiring Our Heroes worked with Toyota and Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Dakota Meyer to create the Personal Branding Resume Engine, an online tool that helps transitioning service members and veterans from every branch of service to convert their considerable skills into powerful resume verbiage. July 2013 saw the addition of an employer search feature that now allows jobseekers to add their completed resumes to a database searchable by employers at absolutely no cost. Other online resume banks and recruitment tools often charge for these services, so the goal of including this feature free-of-charge is to level the playing field for small businesses and help companies of every size find quality candidates.

Veteran Unemployment Numbers - The unemployment rate for post-9/11 veterans remains at nearly 10% and for veterans under the age of 25, it’s nearly 30%. With a million more men and women expected to leave the military over the next five years, this is a critical time for our country to address this issue and help our heroes find meaningful employment.
