The importance of protecting your child's oral health

There is a crucial link between dental health and overall health - and a new campaign to help spread that message.  The Mighty Mouth Campaign brings together dentists, doctors, fitness and health experts to help spread this simple, but powerful message - "You're not fit unless your mouth is fit." The campaign is sponsored by Washington Dental Service Foundation, a non-profit organization funded by Delta Dental of Washington.

Dr. Rob Nohle, Chief of Pediatrics at Group Health, joined guest host Kim Holcomb to share the importance of teaching children good dental habits from a very young age.

Some of Dr. Nohle's tips:

Children with painful dental decay may have difficulty:

  • Eating
  • Sleeping
  • Concentrating in school

Untreated tooth decay can lead to serious health problems

Tips for protecting your child's oral health:

  • First oral health checkup by first birthday by a dentist of physician
  • Brush teeth twice a day with a smear of fluoridated toothpaste
  • Floss daily when teeth begin to touch
  • Choose healthy snacks, like cheese, fruits and vegetables
  • Limit snacks that are high in carbohydrates (like crackers or bagels), sticky (like raisins), as well as sweet and acidic drinks (like sports drinks and sodas, even diet sodas)
