You can attach many labels to Lawyer Milloy:
- University of Washington Huskies Hall of Fame football and baseball player
- Three-time NFL All Pro safety (15 year NFL career w/ New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills and Seattle Seahawks)
- Super Bowl Champion (with the New England Patriots in 2001)
- Successful businessman
His current mission is to level the playing field for teenagers growing up in families affected by drug abuse, domestic violence and other challenges. He's using his upcoming 40th birthday to launch the Lawyer Milloy Foundation and introduce the first beneficiary: alma mater, Lincoln High School in Tacoma.
Lawyer joined Margaret to talk about the inspiration for the foundation and its mission. He also shared a little about the challenges he faced growing up, and how his high school and college football coaches (the late Bill Milus and Don James, respectively) played pivotal roles in setting the stage for his successful, 15 year NFL career, which includes a Super Bowl championship in 2001 as part of the New England Patriots.
Lawyer also previewed the Lawyer Milloy Foundation's Gala Event, which takes place Friday, November 15 at Columbia Tower Club in Seattle. The event will celebrate his 40th birthday and raise funds for the Lincoln High School Football Boosters, which supports the football team. The team is coached by Jon Kitna, Lawyer's quarterback from 5th grade through high school (at Lincoln). Kitna forged a 16 year NFL career, including a stint with the Seahawks, before returning to teach and coach at Lincoln, as well as work to help young men build respect for themselves and others.
Margaret wrapped up the chat by surprising Lawyer with a special "40" cupcake cake made by Pinkabella Cupcakes. Owner Margo Engberg brought the cake out while the audience sang "Happy Birthday." Margo also treated the entire audience to special cupcakes. (Pinkabella is providing cupcakes for Friday night's gala).
A number of celebrites and local businesses have donated services and products to the gala's silent auction, including hip hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who donated a gift basket filled with goodies (including a gold record!); Mariners legend Edgar Martinez & El Zecatecano Mezcal partner Gene Juarez, who teamed up with Salty's to donate a catered dinner for 6 valued at $3,000; and Goldfarb Jewelers, who will raffle off the chance to win a half carat diamond solitaire!
