In 1936, the first completely integrated audience sat together for a production of "Porgy and Bess" at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C, after the cast refused to perform for a segregated audience. In 2012, the musical received new life, winning the Tony award for "Best Musical Revival", and was named "Broadway Musical of the Year" by Time magazine. It's more famous number, "Summertime," is the most popular cover song in pop music, with over 30,000 recorded performances.
The 5th Avenue Theatre's new production of "Porgy and Bess" opens tonight. But before they take the stage for opening night, Sumayya Ali and David Huey stopped by the show to perform "Summertime." The musical runs through June 29th at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle. For tickets click HERE.
