Almost every restaurant you go into nowadays have dishes that are "Gluten-free", but what does that really mean? If you don't have gluten allergy or celiac disease, this might get a little confusing. Our nutritionist Deborah Enos is here to tell us what exactly is gluten and what it means for our health.

Tips:

 

Breakfast

Drop: Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Granola: This granola may have a great crunch but its main ingredient is corn. Personally, I feel that we eat enough corn and I prefer eating granola that uses higher quality ingredients like quinoa

Swap: KIND Healthy Grains – This granola from KIND is made with a unique blend of 100% gluten-free, whole grains like quinoa, amaranth, millet, and buckwheat and is higher in protein and fiber than typical granolas. One fourth of a cup of KIND Healthy Grains is only about 90 calories, 2g of fat, and 4g of sugar.

Lunch

Drop: Trader Joe’s Flourless Bread  – If looking to make a staple sandwich for lunch; steer clear of using this bread. There is nothing wrong with the bread, but keep in mind that the label says FLOURLESS, WHICH DOES NOT MEAN GLUTEN FREE.

Swap: Udi's Whole Grain Bread – This gluten-free bread is made from hearty grains and has a wholesome balance of nutrients, vitamins and earthy flavors. Two slices are only 130 calories and 4g of fat.

Snacks

Drop: Heavily flavored potato chips. Unfortunately the yummy flavoring is usually the culprit in turning a gluten free potato into something that is not gluten free.

Swap:popchips! All of the popchips brands are GF. As you know, I’m a big fan and I use them in salads and even grind them up as a replacement for bread crumbs.

Drop: Annie’s Ginger Snap Bunny Cookies –While they are tasty, there are 8 grams of sugar and 4 grams of fat in a serving.

Swap: K-Kritters Animal Cookies – This is a terrific swap. A serving only has 3 grams of sugar and 2 grams of fat. It’s a nice Gluten Free way to end your meal. A touch of sugar when compared to the Annie’s Brand.
