Going to the spa can be expensive, so today we're learning some do-it-yourself at-home spa recipes for a little extra pampering. Former Sea Gal and owner of Flawless Beauty Bars, Sequoia Leopold shows us some easy spa recipes we can try at home.
Treatment 1: Hand Exfoliator [Kari Gran Original Recipe]
Be Kind to Your Skin Hand Exfoliator: Wave goodbye to dry winter hands. This time of year, the skin really loves a little extra moisture. Mix equal parts of olive oil with unrefined sugar and massage on hands for one minute. It’s best to remove with a warm washcloth. Your hands will be soft and hydrated.
Treatment 2: Lip Scrub [Kari Gran Original Recipe]
Share the Lip Scrub: Kiss your dry, winter lips farewell. Use equal parts of unrefined, organic brown sugar, and olive oil. Mix equal parts of olive oil with unrefined brown sugar. Form a paste and massage into dry lips. Wipe excess sugar and apply Kari Gran Lip Whip for an extra moisturizing treatment if needed. This is our favorite way to "share the love.”
Unrefined brown sugar (a.k.a. raw sugar) is slightly purified, crystallized evaporated cane juice. This distinctive, caramel-flavored sugar comes in a variety of flavors including demerara, dark muscovado, and turbinado. Try a sugar that has not been processed with bone char which essentially "whitens' the sugar. Mix with organic honey. Mix to form a paste and massage onto dry lips for 30 seconds. Rinse and apply lip balm (or Lip Whip!). Sugar is a natural way to exfoliate and unlike salt granules, will not sting if there are chapping small cuts present (often in the corners of the mouth this time of year).
Treatment 3: Greek Yogurt and Honey Mask [Kari Gran Original Recipe]
Greek yogurt, full fat please. It is full of all of the good things: protein, enzymes, zinc and lactic acid, which is a gentle way to exfoliate dead skin. Honey is a natural moisturizer — it's antibacterial, contains antioxidants, vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin C, Calcium & Iron. It's a kinder way to add an exfoliation step to your existing skin care ritual.
Warm the honey slightly and mix with the yogurt. Use 1 tablespoon of each. Apply to cleansed skin and leave on for 10-15 minutes. As with any mask, do not put too close to the eye area. Rinse and moisturize. I like to do this once a week, sometimes twice. With exfoliation, I believe it's good in moderation.
Treatment 4: Makeup brush cleaner [Sequoia Leopold Recipe, of My Flawless Beauty Bar]
Use a quarter-size of soap and dime size of olive oil. Add room-temperature water, swirl brushes, rinse well. Towel dry.
