In 2005, American Eric Volz moved from California to Nicaragua to start a bilingual magazine called "El Puente". There he met a woman named Doris Jimenez and they had a short but close relationship, even after it ended less than a year later. Then one night in 2006 he received a devastating call informing him that Doris had been brutally raped and murdered inside her own clothing boutique. Before he knew it, despite evidence of being hundreds of miles away at the time of the murder, Eric was tried, convicted and sentenced to 30 years in a Nicaraguan prison for a crime he did not commit. After serving more than a year in prison, Eric Volz was finally released and deported back to America. He now shares his story in a new book, "Gringo Nightmare".
You can learn much more about Eric's experience at an event sponsored by the World Affairs Council and Seattle University. "A Conversation with Eric Volz" is tonight from 6:30-9:00pm at the Temple de Hirsch Sinai (1511 E. Pike St). Tickets start at $5 and will be available at the door. The public is invited to attend and books will be available there for signing. For more information, click here.
