According to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, it is a little known and astonishing fact that infections cause nearly a quarter of all cancers, and this is a major global health problem. In fact, Uganda has one of the highest cancer rates in the world, with six out of ten of the most common cancers there related to infectious disease. Fred Hutch has partnered with Uganda Cancer Institute in Kampala to forge innovative studies of infection related cancers. The president and director of the Hutchinson Center, Doctor Larry Corey, and Doctor Corey Casper, who is an infectious disease specialist in the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division at Fred Hutch, joined us today to explain all the details.
