New on DVD: Collectors may like these new releases

12:52 PM PDT on Thursday, July 19, 2007

By MARY LOOS / NWCN

A retro title for collectors, and some unavailable material highlight what’s new on DVD this week.

"Red Dawn: Collector’s Edition"

Head back to the 1980s, and the "Brat Pack" as the Collector’s Edition of "Red Dawn" hits the video store shelves.

This Cold War scenario was the first film to receive a "PG-13" rating when it was released in 1984. “Red Dawn” stars Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson and Jennifer Grey, as high school students defending their small Rocky Mountain town against invading Soviet forces.

The 2-disc widescreen release includes a "carnage counter" which tallies the film’s violence.

Disc two includes four featurettes. Check out the retrospective on the making of the film, the military training the actors had to go through, what it took to create "World War III" and a return to the small New Mexico town where the film was shot.

"Red Dawn: Collector’s Edition" is armed and ready for pick up.

"Factory Girl"

Sienna Miller fills the shoes of legendary Andy Warhol "It Girl", Edie Sedgwick, in "Factory Girl".

Go inside the legendary digs of Andy Warhol and witness Edie’s rise to fame from art student to counter-culture heroine.

Guy Pearce plays Andy Warhol, while Hayden Christensen, Jimmy Fallon and Mena Suvari take on some of the supporting roles.

Mixing performances from those actors with actual footage from Warhol’s movies and more, "Factory Girl" takes a look at the sex, drugs and rock and roll insides of his world.

This unrated director’s cut includes over fifteen minutes of footage too steamy for theaters. You can also listen in to director commentary, catch several featurettes, deleted scenes, audition tapes and more.

"The Hills Have Eyes 2"

Graphic, gruesome violence fills "The Hills Have Eyes 2". This time a band of National Guard trainees are stalked and captured by the mutants.

Famed horror master, Wes Craven, turns it up several notches with this sequel.

Available in a theatrical "R rated" version or an unrated cut, "The Hills Have Eyes 2" has different features for each.

The theatrical rated version is available as a dual-sided fullscreen / widescreen disc. It also includes a making of featurette and trailers.

The unrated DVD expands on that with an alternate ending, deleted scenes, gag reel, and more.

"Premonition"

Finally this week, Sandra Bullock is Linda Hanson, a housewife with a seemingly perfect life. She wakes up one morning to be notified that her husband, Julian McMahon, has been killed in an accident.

The next morning she begins to unravel the story and discover that her perfect life may not be as perfect as she thought.

You’ll find "Premonition" on DVD and Blu-Ray. The film is rated "PG-13" for some violent content, disturbing images, thematic material and brief language.

Features include deleted scenes, an alternate ending, a gag reel, a few featurettes, including "Real Premonitions", and commentaries.

So while there are some releases you might want to catch up on, others may be for more specific audiences.
