Winter Storm Warning in effect for parts of Western Washington

Areas near Bellingham and north should brace for snowy and icy conditions. Areas of Whatcom County could see ice accumulations of 1/3 inch.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for western Whatcom County until 4 p.m. Thursday.

Snow accumulations of 1-3 inches are expected for areas near Bellingham and north. The National Weather Service Seattle said early Thursday morning to plan on difficult travel conditions due to mixed precipitation.

Many areas will see snow transition to freezing rain Thursday morning causing icy conditions. Ice accumulation of 1/3 of an inch up to 1 inch is possible, which could cause downed power lines and downed tree limbs. Freezing rain may persist through Thursday afternoon near Lynden and Sumas.

The Cascades in Pierce and Lewis Counties, including Crystal Mountain Ski Area and Paradise on Mount Rainier, are also under a Winter Storm Warning until 6 a.m. Friday, the National Weather Service said Thursday morning.

A Winter Storm Watch - which means means there is potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel - begins Friday morning into Friday evening for the area.

The vast majority of western Washington will see widespread rain through Thursday. Snow levels rise to 3,000 feet Thursday and jump to 4,000 feet on Friday. Mountain areas may pick up 1-3 feet of snow between Thursday morning and Friday night.
