Mosquitoes and flies are two of the biggest pests during the Summer and they can completely ruin your outdoor BBQ. Before spraying yourself or your kiddos with chemicals, check out these three easy and natural ways to rid yourself of the bugs.

{DIY Bug Repellent}

This spray is a mix of essential oils which work naturally to combat pests. Keep in mind, you will likely have to reapply this a little more than your typical chemical bug spray. For me, it's good for about an hour or so then I simply spray again. That might be annoying to some but for me, I'd rather be chemical free so I'm good with it.

2 Cups Witch Hazel

15 Drops of Citronella Essential Oil

15 Drops of Lemongrass Essential Oil

10 Drops of Lavender Essential Oil

Plus, you can add about 5-10 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil if you would like. It's not required but recommended.

Simply mix the essential drops into the witch hazel and place it in a spray bottle. Do not spray this directly on your face and if your kids are going to use it, try it in a small spot first just to be sure your kiddos are not allergic to any essential oils. It does actually work, but it's not waterproof so you'll have to reapply if you get wet or if you are dripping in sweat.

{Natural Way to Rid the Flies}

Simply cut lemons in half and stick cloves into the halves. You can place the lemons around your cookout outdoors to keep the flies at bay. This also does work, you can put them in cupcake holders to make it pretty or make a cute centerpiece with them as well.

{Make Your Own Citronella Candle}

Yep, you can take it even a step further by making your own citronella candle. If you made the bug spray then you probably have the citronella on hand, visit PositivelySplendid.com and learn how to make a citronella candle! It looks like a fun, weekend project!

That's it. Simple and easy. Get those bugs away without overdosing on chemicals!

PS. You can purchase essential oils at any natural food store.
