SUMNER, Wash. – A 35-year-old Sumner man was killed and his two passengers critically injured on West Valley Highway in Sumner Monday afternoon.

According to WSP investigators, the driver of a blue BMW traveled northbound on West Valley Highway at a high rate of speed, lost control, crossed into oncoming traffic and then left the roadway striking a tree on the southbound shoulder.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Auburn Firefighters extricated the two male passengers – ages 46 and 22, also from the Sumner area.

They both are listed in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center.

The driver did not appear to be wearing a seatbelt, but at least one of the passengers was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

Though there was alcohol in the vehicle, it is unknown if the driver had been drinking. Toxicology results are pending.
