During cold spell, check in on elderly neighbors
07:44 AM PST on Thursday, December 18, 2008
SEATTLE - Marie Donahoe is quick to offer a cup of warmth to visitors. The 83-year old Donahoe would normally be serving coffee at the Southeast Senior Center, but she's finishing her Christmas cards instead, warned by her loved ones that it's too icy and cold to leave the house.
“They were predicting snow, so my son called me and told me to stay home then my daughter did then the two neighbors they told me to stay home and it did start snowing about 7,” she said.
She says her son took a bunch of her Christmas cards to the post office. Her neighbor is delivering more cat food for her pet after work.
Around town, King County workers and others are delivering food, some going to food banks, on behalf of their vulnerable senior neighbors.

The weather is keeping Marie away from her beloved senior center.
“Because my grandson down there who adopted me he said ‘stay home, grandma!’” she said.
If you're a neighbor of a senior needing assistance, or a senior yourself who needs help, contact King County Senior Information and Assistance. The number is 1-888-4ELDERS. They are open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
