WSP offers winter driving advice
06:22 PM PST on Tuesday, December 16, 2008
SHELTON, Wash. - Washington State Patrol’s driving course in Shelton is where police learn from their driving mistakes.
Troopers there say ice and snow are most dangerous when drivers forget to use common sense.
If you find yourself spinning out of control, instructors say take your foot off the gas and - as hard as it may be - try to remain calm.

"Just keep your nose of your car going straight down the road,” Corporal Kevin Forrester said. “Try not to slam on the brakes. Try not to make large drastic moves with your steering wheel."
Maintaining a safe speed is the best way to avoid a spinout, but having quality tires is also key.
Studded tires and chains can keep you out of bad situations, but for many - there's a cheaper fix.
"If you stop and all of a sudden can't get traction, kitty litter or a small bag of sand in the trunk will definitely help out,” Forrester said.
If you're not confident in your abilities on the ice, WSP says the best advice is to stay off the roads until it warms up. Even if you avoid spinning out or ending up in a ditch, you can get stuck for hours in traffic backups.
The state patrol says it's a good idea to fill up your tanks and have blankets, food and water in your trunk if you're heading out into the snow.
