First snow causes 70 wrecks in Eastern WA

10:46 AM PST on Saturday, November 29, 2008

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The first snow of the season caught some drivers unprepared, leading to more than 70 wrecks in Eastern Washington.

Temperatures dropped Friday afternoon and a storm front that was dumping rain suddenly started dumping snow, dropping up to an inch and a half of snow in some areas of the Inland Northwest by 5 p.m and making driving dangerous.

Two people died in a head-on collision around 3:50 p.m. north of Deer Park, Wash., near the intersection of Bridges and Short. A truck hit a car and ended up in the ditch just off the road. The two people in the car died. Authorities say the victims were 20 and 18 years of age, but they are not yet releasing their names. Troopers later arrested 39-year-old Mark Robinson for allegedly driving under the influence.

Just before that at 3 p.m., a one-car rollover wreck killed a person that was driving along Highway 2 and Highway 211 in Pend Oreille County near Diamond Lake, Wash. Clyde Lippencott, 64, died at the scene. A passenger in that car was hospitalized. Officials say the driver lost control, rolling into a ditch.

Another wreck along Interstate 90 last night sent one person to the hospital. Police say a semi and car collided going eastbound just east of Liberty Lake. WSP says that victim only has minor injuries.
